I've been skating for a month, the other day I went to a park and decided to try learning to roll in. I fell probably 15 times and had a blast, and the more experienced skaters were super stoked that I was trying and they were willing to give tips and pointers. Just go to the park and try! And don't be afraid to talk to people!

Hey John, there actually is a reason not to push mongo. When you push regularly your center of gravity is over the center of the board making it a lot more stable and easy to keep your weight centered. When you push mongo your center of gravity is on the back of the board and makes it a lot harder to balance. Obviously people who have been skating. along time like Tiago aren't going to have a problem with it, but as someone who has been teaching skating for a long time I can say a lot of my students are noticeably more stable when pushing normal

I pushed mongo when I first started skating and my older brothers would say for every mongo push I did was a punch to the arm. As you could guess I learned how to push regular lmao

"most beginner skaters just want to kickflip". I just want to be able to get on without dying

Typo in the thumbnail John Hill! Great video though as always!

You should make a whole deep in depth video on how exactly you progress in skateboarding. And how to deal with it mentally, or help someone with who is a self conscious skater and fear of a falling. Id love it since your like my #1 inspiration for progressing in skating.

My personal beginner mistake with ollie: I was thinking of jumping the board completely forgetting me the person has to jump too haha

I just recently got a toy machine complete from a local shop. Well worth the $110 price tag. For a person that hasn't been skateboarding for over a decade. I'm glad I picked the right size for me. I'm 32 and skated a park I used to frequent when I was 15. It felt fucking awesome, all the skaters at the park were friendly, the weather was great. Overall, a great day. I live in Phoenix AZ, I hope I can run into Lastra, or Jaws one day.

Love the videos and everything you do, I went through some really dark and depressing times in my life. Finding you has kept me sane, and also has gotten me into skating. I’m 27 so starting out pretty late but the positive vibes that you throw out just make me wanna get better, and learn everything I can about the sport. I know this is a huge statement but I believe skating may have saved my life. It’s given me a new outlook. Something to work towards. So I guess what I’m trying to say is just thanks for doing what you do, and being such a swell dude.

I’ve been skating for about 4 months and what John said about not skating enough is facts. Like lately I haven’t been as good as I was a month ago because I haven’t been skating much.it really makes sense now

I have to say, I'm a huge fan of you, John.
When I first started getting into the world of YouTubing/vlogging content, especially in the skateboarding world, Chris Chann was always my favorite for his educational and inspirational, skating based content.. which is kinda how I found you.
But he's gone in a direction I don't resonate with anymore as far as content(no offense and only love and honor to him). You have remained truly centered and on a rhythm/path that I genuinely love and benefit from as a human being and skater. Actually, I used to be annoyed of you at one point a few years back, but you've grown and become someone I really respect. I hope you see this. And I hope Chris Chann does too. I miss when his content was more wholesome and educational like this.
All love, all love. God bless 💜💜

I was so entertained watching you skate that I actually bought a skateboard myself and I began skating yesterday. I can almost do an ollie!

Equipment madness is a real thing, and it can get costly too haha.

5 months into skateboarding and I think mallgrabbing might just be the most confortable way to carry a board.

Great video! I do have to disagree with the $100 requirement, and mongo. While yes a $100 board will be far better, a beginner skater doesn’t need to spend that much on something they may not even stick with. As for mongo if you’re able to push smoothly and controlled, there’s nothing wrong with it. Most of us aren’t pros bombing lines in the street so no harm in it...again as long as you don’t look goofy and out of control doing it.
