I practice these all religiously---I just attended a company wide training and each week my colleagues and I collaborated on our group presentation----and they elected me---in a suit and tie to do the presentation----which I let them "push" me into because the higher/other management team were present. Take every opportunity to shine. It's not simply for that company, Columbia, those people, it's to have it as a practice so that I was later able to do so at a Chamber of Commerce meeting with Congressman, Senators and a Councilman and business leaders and start negotiations on a million dollar real estate deal. Each public moment is a chance to practice Standing Out so that it becomes second nature and people take notice of you. Most successful people aren't huge Brainiac---they simply know how to work to stand out with appearance, effort, work, creativity and optimism/empathy.

While I do agree with you, it has been my experience that I need to be as “grey man” as possible, while keeping my head down and nose to the grind stone or else my “employer/direct supervisor “ will see me as a threat and want to get rid of me asap.
