My uncle was part of the third assault wave. His friend from back home ended up in a different landing craft after they were separated. Every few seconds, my uncle glanced over to check on his friend’s craft. But the last time he looked, it was gone—a direct hit had sunk it, killing everyone on board. He later told me that nine out of ten men in his unit didn’t survive the war.
