I am intently following along and I hear “390” and I immediately think Oh Crap, PatMac really knows some stuff that I do not understand so I perk-up waiting for the explanation - then he turns and grins and says “290” - I was so relieved I wasn’t going to have to learn some new formula or math for Nav 😂😂😂 - always good stuff 👍👍

Excellent video! In some ways, Land Nav is the backbone of good infantry leader skills. Request: Do a complete series of vids on this topic!

Glad I learned this as a grunt. My civilian hunting buddies made light of my map, until they became lost. It’s easy to get turned around and terrain association only takes you so far. I’m all about technology but cell phone signals can be spotty, if any and batteries die.

Awesome. Now I can legitimately tell my wife that we do NOT need to stop to ask for directions!

This is by far, the simplest and most straightforward tutorial I’ve seen yet. Watched hours of this stuff, took a course in college on this, and in just over 8min Pat spelled it all out for free…

Kick’n ass with these skills. Thankyou for sharing.

I heard 390 degrees and I thought PatMac must have one of those SF compasses that nobody else can get, and then I realize that his glasses work just like mine.🙂🙃✌️

This is the most concise and easily understood basic explanation of land nav I have ever heard. I would have caught on so much quicker as a young 19D had my instructors gave me this instead. Thanks yet again Mac.

Outstanding video. You're bringing back (or better said teaching again) what I have missed since 1981. Love your videos brother.

Land Nav is great skill set, It is rare to find anyone who has and maintains the skill. Those that have such skills are the ones I prefer to hang with.

I was pretty lucky, my dad taught first aid and orienteering in my Boy Scout troop so when I got to basic it was super easy for me. I enjoy it to be honest. Now I want to get one of those Garmin watches, the idea of having a topo map right on my wrist just blows my mind.

excellent video! In pilot training, we learned the phrase "East is least, West is best" on aviation charts for the magnetic inclination/declination that can change somewhat faster even in a slow plane...So the phrase indicates subtract the agonic line declination # on the chart when fling past it to the east, and if flying to the west, add the #. Of course the compass doesn't know about that, so you have to keep that in mind because it DOES matter on the charts!!! :)

This is the easiest video I have seen. The others are like, you have to place your compass on the two points you want, then you have to twist the map exactly so the compass is pointing north, and then...

This is just, make line on grid square, add magnetic declination, boom.

Land navigation was one of the best parts of being a Cav Scout. Good skills to have.

If anyone is curious, the reason for the difference in magnetic north and grid north is because of the nature of a map. Maps are flat, the earth is an oblate spheroid (squished ball). When you stretch a roughly spherical object and make it flat, you distort the curved lines that point north on a globe. That is a map projection. Right angles are useful for measurements, but don't play well with a stretched flat ball. Hence the diagram that gives you the difference between grid north and magnetic north at the bottom of the map.

Love the authenticity. Love the teaching. I’m getting into map making with QGIS and this is SUPER helpful!
