Been playing golf for 27 years. I have a big collection of very nice golf clubs.

During the extremely hot, humid weather where I live (mid May through October) I carry 8 clubs when I walk... to make room for water.

It’s a blast when between clubs because I have to get creative. I usually play to within 4 to 7 strokes of my 14 club rounds.

I think new golfers can play better golf with 6 to 8 clubs. I try to fill 30 to 35 yard gaps with my selection of 8 (actually 7) clubs. Sometimes I just carry odd number clubs and swap to even the next afternoon. Even wear on my clubs.

My new golfer 8 club set;

1) Putter (always in the bag plus 7 more)

2) Driver/3 Wood - Suggestion ➡️ Taylormade Original One 13.5 turned up to 15*

3) 5 Wood/7 Wood (used off the deck instead of TM Original One, pick to fill middle of 4 hybrid D/3 Wood Gap)

4) 4 Hybrid

5) 6Iron

6) 8 Iron

7) Pitching Wedge

8) 54* Wedge

Clubs that have enough loft to get the ball up in that air and spinning. Even more so if you are an older learner/ slower swing speed / slicer of the ball. Avoid the low lofted super game improvement irons. More back spin = less side spin ( slice)
For me at 67 years old and 5 years into golf ( was a slicer), my suggestion is to buy second hand if you can to avoid buyers remorse at great cost.

If I was starting again my bag would be as follows;
Driver: loft at 12 + degrees ( Cleveland HB Turbo or Wilson Launch pad) or one of the mini Drivers ( TM 13 degree or a GX7 14 degree)
Fairway wood: 5 wood around 18 degrees ( easier to get it off the deck, forget 15 degree 3 woods ) .
Hybrid/ Irons: I would start out with Cleveland HB Launcher ( turbos if you can find them), Wilson Launch pads/ Cobra T rails, Tour Edge E 521 iron-woods. Lofts from 22 to 30 degrees. Above 30 degrees you could either continue with the hybrid-iron style or go to a cavity back style. I like the one-length style irons as it is easier on my back and easy to learn to use one swing/ ball position.
Wedges: Cleveland CBX or CBX2 ( 54/58 degrees or 56 /60) depending on the loft of your PW / GW.
Putter: Cheap is good at first/ mallet style.
Be aware that you will possibly out grow the first set within 3 years, but there are always learners looking to buy clubs second hand.

When I first started out playing golf I had five clubs in my bag had a three wood 7 iron pitching wedge sand wedge and my putter.
I had to learn how to play with those clubs I had them about five years and looking back I would have to say there were some of the best rounds of golf I ever played but that was 40 years ago.
That was one of the best golf lessons you ever done Mr Taylor.

I played golf for the first time a week ago with some rental clubs. It obviously went horribly lol so now I want to get into the sport. I’m picking up some used Mizuno JPX 825 pros for $200 next week. I’m super excited. Now I just need a driver.

I very new to golf. I played 9 holes with a friend and shot about 80 so I was shite. I did love it and went and did 4 lessons and am now looking at buying some clubs. I was looking at the Callaway edge set, They were a tad more then I was hoping to spend but if they are worth it and will last me I'm happy to spend the money. Are they worth the money and should I spend around that or aim at cheeper set?

Thoughts on using old / vantage sets? I've got an old set of Wilson K-28 irons and Wilson aqua tite woods ( actually made of wood) from I'm guessing the 70's that were a family members. I'd like to get some lessons and was thinking of using these for the time being till I get a feel for the game and hitting decent before buying a modern set.

Great video! I'm brand new to golf and this was very helpful. What do you think of not carrying a driver and just using a 3 wood to drive?

Thank you for interesting video. I 100% agree. I started golf a few months ago. Even I just bought a set of T300 I haven't used my iron 6, 8 or P (plastic wrap still around the grip). Still thinking if I need any fairway wood at all or is a hybrid 3 the right choice. Still playing with borrowed driver and putter. I think those are the most chritical an need to be fitted. I still hope I can enhance my swing so much during the winter that it is not worth to fit driver yet. Anyhow next summer I most probably have about eight clubs and that will be enough.

Back playing golf since the Covid lockdown since playing in the Mid 1990's.
Great to see how it all moved on, many then used 1/2 sets covering your key points.

But the modern games is great, apps for distance and shot advice, technology in clubs and the YouTube coaches is fantastic.
Just retired a set of Ben Sayers beginners set, which I could not fault.
Bought in October brand new callway XR16 woods, driver, Hybrid. Then picked 3W, 5W and just got a 7W Rogue too.
( 5 year old technology but but space age to this hibernator )
Hybrid is good by the 5W and 7W have much better accuracy, .
Irons was going 2nd hand irons until i seen the reviews on the Insist 500 irons, which are playing fine.
Tested by a U tube channel who seen little in performance between these £350 clubs and £1200 clubs.

Fitted clubs? once the speed consistency of swing develops, i will possibly looks at it,
Getting 150-160 yards from a 7iron (7i) but only 5 yards further from 6i gain the same with the 5i
7W 200yards, 5W 220 yards and the driver 240yards. ( 20 YARDS ON EACH WOULD BE GREAT)

PRGR has assisted greatly on swing speed.
Using daily to sort my speed and distance.

Very appreciative of the on going videos.

Roll on 2021 season,

Hi Ali, I believe a cheap set of game improvement irons is sufficient and spend the majority of your money on a driver, hybrid, specialist wedge and putter. A beginner and probably most of us golfers would hit 90% of our shots with those 4 clubs. So maybe only take these 4 clubs to the range at times to hone our skills 👍

I just got fitted for new irons and basically said to the fitter I'm not the best striker of the ball and would like a little bit of forgiveness I tested a few he recommended and came out with Callaway mavrik pro irons and Callaway jaws wedges I'm of 4 H'cap and thought best to be honest about my strike . Fantastic clubs and already broken par of the course.

Just bought a set of Ryder Cup II clubs from a local seller today to get into playing. They look fairly vintage but I can't find much online about them.
