whenever math is involved, I'm not afraid, I just check out because I'm lost.

I think we can both agree that I am absolutely horrible at math. I can handle the basics, but when there's more letters than numbers in a formula, I certainly do freak out. It's like my brain just shuts down and says forget this.

That said, I think you're 100% correct in the way that math is taught. I have full confidence that I would have done much better with math if I had been provided with real life examples, and perhaps given some sort of puzzle to solve. Instead, I was handed a sheet with 50 questions and another sheet with 10 formulas and expected to spend hours solving them. It never happened, and that's likely why I never succeeded.

Maths is just pure trauma, brings me to tears I wish I could embrace it, it all looks to complicated and difficult.

I am going to share this with a lot of people. I first fell in love with math many years ago when my pre-calculus teacher would routinely give us inductive proofs to do for extra credit. Yet somehow I wound up with a degree history. I recently returned to college in midlife and decided to pursue my interest in mathematics. I earned a BS in mathematics and today I am starting my first classes toward my master's in pure mathematics.

I always was fascinated with Astronomy, astrophysics, computer science technology, the how and why of the world.

Bad teachers in my youth killed any love for math and I get high blood pressure the second I see anything math related.

Though the curiosity is still there but it only gets you so far.

It's not math, it's letter you get because of math, that is why I have math anxiety

Years before I was “supposed” to learn calculus, I went to my math teacher in his office.

— What is calculus? I asked him. He took a sheet of paper, and drew axes and a line.

— You know what a function is? y=mx+b.

— Yes, I answered. He then shaded the part under the line down to the x axis.

— Well, integration is calculating the AREA beneath the curve.

— Oh. And what is differentiation? I asked.

He drew another set of axes and drew a squiggly line.

— Integration is the slope at a given point.

— Oh, I see.

— Now, you don’t have to sweat calculating everything, you can “integrate” your equation. Suppose your equation is “y=3x-4”, well if you look in a table of integral and see the form of your equation, you will see that the integral is “ƒ 3x-4 = (3x²)/2-4”.

That’s it. It took my teacher less than 20 minutes to show me what calculus is all about.

I was hesitant how he’s started, but this is one of the best explanations I have heard on this subject . Absolute wisdom !i really wish someone said this to me as a kid

My problem with mathematics is that I need more time than other people to understand it. I just have to put in a lot of mental energy to learn a simple thing. On the contrary, some people get it the first time.

My daughter, and her mother, were both very good at math (Kaity performed differential calculus in her head and Eleanor cannot understand why her peers have trouble with algebra). I've got the spatial sense down and am used to inferring the contents of a cube based on knowing the sizes of the assumed constituent items.

I did fine in math until I got to calculus in university. I think part of the difficulty is that it's so dull. lol.

“It’s possible you’ve never done math before!”- As I look at my transcripts where I failed three developmental courses despite studying 2 hours a night.
Well. Whatever I WAS doing in those math classes, I sure sucked at it.

I always hated math while growing up. It wasn't until I started programming video games at university that I had my "see the matrix" moment and realized that everything in our universe is math. Math is incredible in that it can describe anything, but pair that with programming, and you can create anything. I'm now an AI programmer at Gearbox Software and couldn't imagine my life without math. Great video!

Dear people who are good at maths

Stop trying to convince us mere mortals that we don't suck at maths!!
I sit in class and listen to my smarter classmates and my teacher make me feel like the stupid idiot I am then go home and practice my maths EVERY.SINGLE.DAY and guess... I still suck at it!!
