Talked to a couple plumbers about this, and they prefer to not seal the base in case of wax ring failure. You run the risk of water damage if you do. We had a wax ring seal failure and luckily we saw some seepage early before the water did damage to the floor.

I once came across a wax ring that failed during plunging. I only noticed it because of a lack of sealer around the base which allowed water and air to squirt in and out through the failed ring. What do you think of leaving a small section in the back unsealed in order to reveal this kind of failure?

Don't you use a wedge tool to swipe the grout?

I agree you need to leave a gap in the back if you do caulk. If toilet sits flat and doesn't have gaps then not recommended. A trick I've learned when you do is to have a spray bottle with denatured alcohol. After caulk is applied spray caulk and adjoining surfaces. Caulk will wipe easly and won't stick to the other surfaces, only it is initially applied. A lot less mess. I never use water to wipe silicone.
