if the caulk is keeping the toilet from wobbling, you’ve got some other problems going on

As a plumber of over 25 years I can confidently say you shouldn’t have to caulk around a toilet. Only on basement floor if you have to and in some very specific installation types. ie offset flanges from Toto and so on. Try to avoid it on main and top floors. In case of leak you really want to see the water on the toilet it’s leaking from on that floor instead of noticing it later on the ceiling below. That has never worked out to be the cheaper repair.
A properly installed toilet with well installed tile will never need silicone.

As a maintenance professional, I can say this absolutely is not the way to go. The caulk yellows and gets stained with piss fairly quickly and is a pain to clean. It can also trap the water under the toilet which then can soak into the subfloor and cause a lot more damage without you knowing until it's too late. Best to leave it un-caulked so if the ring does fail, you'll know it immediately and can deal with it before it becomes a bigger issue.

My grandma always told me to recaulk every toilet that I've ever used, so I carry a caulking gun with me every single day of my life. EDC.

Never, never caulk around a toilet. If the seal goes bad and you have a slow leak, you’ll never know till it’s too late.

I've been a plumber for 30 years. Third generation plumber. The ceramic toilet should be adhered to the ceramic tile with sanded grout. If on top of linoleum or composite flooring caulk is the only thing that will adhere. The flange bolts do not secure the toilet to the floor. Grout is the most common method among plumbers.

Yes always caulk so if your toilet someday starts leaking you'll never know and it will rot out your floor real good .

You should also caulk all or your siding joints as well. Make sure you get a good bead at the bottom. That’ll make it extra water proof.

Glad you addressed a weeping hole in the back! Good stuff!

That looks really good. 👍
I have learned it's important to tool the bead of caulking. I bought a tooling kit made of silicon. Easy to keep clean
That's the ticket. A clean tool. For me, it was a game changer.

This is a bad practice. If your wax ring leaks, you will get water running down the outside of the drain and rotting out your subfloor. While at the same time the caulking will keep it contained under the toilet, so you never see it haopening

Yes, you do caulk it. I’ve been installing toilets for over 35 yrs, never had one of mine leaked.
Just leave a 3”- 4” gap at the back of the toilet. If the bolts/nuts loosen in time with vibration or extremely heavy people shifting their weight to one side…., the caulk - only use 100% silicone - will also act as an adhesive if it’s on tile, wood, or concrete. Once the silicone dries/cures, you could remove the nuts from the closet bolts and you wouldn’t be able to remove the toilet without cutting the caulk.
And everybody saying oh, what if it leaks, blah, blah, blah, what if the trap leaks inside your vanity and you don’t look in there regularly, who the hell does. The silicone is an additional preventative step for no leaks.

When my caulk wobbles it always leaks. It's called wobblecaulk

No, Just leaving the back not caulked doesn't mean the leak will show up. If there is a leak from the side or front of the toilet the water is going to take the path of least resistance and likely do damage if its on a second floor or a wood subfloor.

As a seasoned plumber. Don't ever do this. This will hide any leaks you may have, and cause the floor to rot out.

Very nice. From not caulking the back to using the spray to keep from making a mess. Good work.

if your toilet wobbles your toilet is installed wrong, period... caulking is to lock the toilet in place so all the stress is not at the bolts and shifting breaking the wax seal...

On cement floors with tile. Use the little plastic wedges in the back if necessary. Then alcohol clean all. Then CLEAR DABS TUB and TILE Latex, water clean up. Much neater job, apply small bead. Tiles are usually a little uneven. White chalk looks terrible when aging. Don’t even notice clear if done right.

Never caulk around a toilet, if the wax gasket starts to leak you will never know until either the floor rots or the ceiling below falls down.

As a professional plumber it’s painful to how many idiots there are in the comments who either didn’t watch till the end where he says to leave a gap or are spouting off about how they “never caulk around the base”. Well read the plumbing code. It’s required.
