Not to get into the weeds but I don't think most people really know about the crusades or the inquisition when they bring it up, they're just repeating things. I wouldn't go as far to say they were good, but I will say the context is usually lost and the statistics are overblown.

Edit: What I'm getting at is the crusades were not about colonialism and the advancement of Christianity and the inquisition wasn't about converting non-believers. It was a war to reclaim Holy land that was taken and stopping the oppression of the Muslims (which, as with all war, unfortunately means a lot of death and often times innocents being killed), there may also be valid commentary about how Muslims are also being oppressed today, but as is the world today of everyone oppressing his neighbor. The inquisition was an institution among Christian communities to stop the spread of heresy among Christians. Witches may have also been harmed, but the "I don't believe in the evidence of God" people would have been fine. Torture was uncommon, the methods were less brutal, the overall death count was relatively low, and it was highly regulated. Granted, I'm not okay with anyone being tortured and killed for syncretic pagan beliefs. It's just worth putting these things into perspective.
