15 MUST-KNOW Shiba Inu Pros and Cons ( Before You Get One )

Some people have a tendency to ignore the Shiba Inu pros and cons that exist and wind up taking on a dog that they’re not prepared for.

Don’t get me wrong, with how cute and cuddly they look as a puppy as well as an adult, it isn’t a hard thing to overlook.

But it happens, and the dog’s nature isn’t addressed throughout its youth and during Shiba Inu training, and before you know it, the dog is either in charge or relocated.

We had a Shiba for almost 16 years. They are very much a cat/dog. She would lay on the back of the sofa and look out the window. Ours wouldn’t let us hold her but she was always close to me. She would be laying at my feet or curled up behind my legs if I was napping on the sofa. They are like husky’s in personality. They are part of the pack but independent and very smart. Our girl would go over to our sliding door and scratch at it to be let’s outside. She came up with it on her own. I was her person and if I was gone for more than a couple of days she would kind of shut down. My husband would call me and say he is worried and wanted to take her to the veterinarian. The second I got home she was jumping up and down mouthing my hand and giving me the biggest Shiba smile while wiggling her tushy. I tried not to travel much after we figured out she got depressed when I was gone. She was extremely loyal to people she considered part of her pack. If she didn’t like someone I knew to be weary of them. I miss her every day.

I have a 6 month Shiba, I concur with everything said in the video. Would also add that they are very good on calling when needing to go outside for their needs.

I could not live without them. Much easier than a husky to live with. My first one lived 14 years and then I had to get a second one because I was so sad without her. They are quirky, intelligent, affectionate in their own way and loyal. Once you understand them, you will have a great relationship.

for anyone wanting confirmation. this video is extremely accurate. Every point in this video is dead on with my 10 month old shiba. Best dog I’ve ever owned. Will be getting another soon.

I'm a proud shiba inu parent for 11 years now and I can say they are the best most loyal loving genius dog that I have ever had the privilege to meet! There are only pros, no cons!

We are Shiba Inu Rescue of Florida. YES Shibas are absolutely adorable and although bias we feel the BEST EVER dogs... but NO not the dog for everyone. We rehome many for the mere reason people get in over their heads and dont know what to do with this primitive breed. Shibas aren't your standard dog. In the beginning they require a lot of hands on preferably exp dog handling experience. However, when the proper work patience and love is put in they make amazingly loyal and loving dogs. We wish people would research and be honest if the Shiba Inu is the right fit dog for their home, family and lifestyle. If you feel you have what it takes then ENJOY!! You have the worlds BEST INU!! XOXO

Shiba Inus are a very elegant and intelligent breed of dogs, look like a teddy, clever like a fox. But they can be stubborn and have a cat like personality to easily ignore you if it is not to their best interest, which is usually food. There are not too keen on petting or cuddling, very aloof about cuddles, and shed a lot, but they are super clean and easily potty trained...but not really for first time dog owners.

This is all spot on. We have a Shiba and we love, love, love her. She's smart AF but also doesn't give AF in terms of traditional motivations, she will only do something if she wants (Because of this she also in no terms can be off leash which is a bummer). The one thing I'd say that I've experienced differently is that my dog is actually very affectionate/cuddly but likes her alone time too which I appreciate (she's not clingy). She's also a weirdo and dramatic (and very judgmental). The shedding is the worst part (she sheds more than my husky/german shepherd did). Overall though Shibas are great dogs but they are certainly not for the faint of heart (not good first dogs, training them is very difficult so you have to know what you are doing).

I had heard all of this before deciding to get one, except how athletic they are, mine keeps up with a Whippet in speed and a Staffordshire in strength, that surprised me a lot.

Our Shiba Buster is awesome, he’s about 2.5 years old now. He can be mouthy when he wants to play or if we are not doing what he wants. His puppy training wasn’t normal or completed due to weirdo Covid restrictions and lockdowns, but overall he is very well mannered for a Shiba. We have a pet rabbit and he is very nice to her, so no issues. He actually loves people and getting pets. He does go off and take naps alone, but will sleep on our bed and hang out with us all the time. He is stubborn, but don’t let the “cons” scare you away from this breed. They are all individuals and some are cuddlier than others.

Shibas also love arbitrarily deciding that they don't like doing something they've always loved or vice versa and get mad if you don't magically know whatever they've suddenly decided is good/bad.

Whew! A day in a life with Shiba can get exhausting! My shiba puppy behaves while I'm gone, he sleeps, plays by himself, doesn't whine or bark...but when I'm back...he gets so hyper!

I have a shiba mix and she is highly intelligent, very cute, very friendly but she’s a big hunter. My shiba mix consistently chases my cat (luckily my cat takes no bull from her though and will put her in her place) and also the pup has hunted and caught 5 birds, 3 mice and 1 snake in the last 6 weeks.

Had a Black and Tan shiba back in the late 90’s. No one really knew the breed then. Cars used to pull over all the time to ask me what breed it was when I was walking him. Loved Yoshi with all my heart up until the time he bit my one year old in the face. All he did was pet him. Needless to say we adopted him out to a wonderful older couple with no kids. Now that me kids are in there 20’s I’m thinking about getting one.

We just got a Shiba/Husky mix puppy and are amazed by her intelligence and personality. She's a talker though!

I want one! So bad! No dog can possibly be as stubborn as my boerboel. He was the most stubborn and spoiled dog there was. Did what he wanted when he wanted, would black mail for treats by stealing tissues and ripping them up and if you ate in front of him he would scream and bark his head off. He was such a loveable and gentle boy. I miss him very much. He lived to 14

My shiba loves to go on walks. However, as soon as I get the leash he starts running away. He’s been doing it for years, every single time lol. Nothing I can do to change him. Sometimes he wants me to chase him or when he feels like he will listen to the “come here” command, last resource I have to pretend like I’m leaving for him to get close to me and I can finally put him on the leash. Maybe he thinks it’s a game

I had an akita/lab mix for years. He was all akita in personality and I am still grieving 8 years since his passing. I'm disabled and though I walk every day, I don't think I can handle another akita, so I'm leaning more and more toward a shiba inu. I fell in love with a friend's Shiba (who was quite the escape artist!) and his personality was so similar to my akita mix. Thank you for this video!

Have my shib for 6 years by now and I'm so happy having her. We don't really train her. She is loyal, healthly and she cleans herself. A shib is totally recommended.
