I have a shiba and one of the truest thing I can say about him is that he is more cat than dog but he absolutely loves to be cuddled

My roommate has a Shiba Inu puppy that I help take care of. He's so smart and good around people but so energetic and definitely strong willed. And bitey lol 😆

Hi:

I came to your channel from James and Laurent's. I thought this was a wonderful video and pretty much agree with all the points. I've not yet watched your other training videos, but I think one thing that doesn't get stressed enough in many of the training videos I've seen elsewhere---and articles I've read--is the importance of building and having a good relationship. No matter what training method and/or tools are used, they won't work if the handler doesn't work to build a solid relationship of trust, respect, and boundaries with the dog. It sounds like your doggo is very lucky to have you as her family and that you've done a lot of work with him, so what a lucky boy! His good behavior is a reflection of all the work and time you have put into teaching him. It's great that you're making videos to educate people. There are still too many who want these dogs because of their looks alone, and that is so sad for the animal.

I currently don't have a Shiba Inu, though I have been around plenty of them. I do love their independent, bold, and stubborn streak. But my first love are German Shepherds followed by Border Collies... different breeds, but all three are crazy high energy dogs, not for the faint of heart!
I love learning from other dog handlers of high-energy dogs.

Thank you for this video; keep up the great work, and wags to your doggo.

A distinction between " training " and retention needs to be made .
All dogs can be trained but some retain their training longer and more consistently than others .
For example i had a Kangal dog prior to my Shiba . they are notorious for being difficult to train, but as it turns out their biggest problem is retention . However, the lack of retention is not based of being stupid but on a will power that makes a shiba look like the most docile and obedient dog on the planet . During consistent trading it appears as though they have permanently learned what they were taught, but once the training stops, they revert to doing what they want . this is not a bad thing if the dog is being used what they are born to do, which is protect livestock . they need to make decisions on their own as the circumstances change from minute to minute . trining their natural tendency out of them is a bad thing .
i suspect that a shiba's stubbornness also has some historical reason for their behavior . dogs are not born to obey humans, that is a human thing that is imposed on them .

so i'm thinking of getting a shiba inu within the next year, and i have two questions regarding the environment around

i've heard either in this video and/or previous ones that it's best to have a fenced off back-yard to play in. our house doesn't have one, how big of an issue is this? we live in the swiss countryside (canton zurich, so it's flatter than most) so there are a lot of trails and public parks around.

my other question is how long can you leave a shiba, a puppy in particular, alone? everyone in the house would either be at school or (potentially) at work and would be gone for most of the day. i've heard from other sources with similar situations that they tire their dog out before they leave so it sleeps first and, from its perspective, is alone for less time.

i feel pretty good about everything else, these are the only issues i'm having in my decision
