A local construction company owner, had transmission issues with his new f-150. The dealership couldn’t figure it out. The truck owners sister just happens to be an engineer at Ford. She brought her laptop back to Colorado, reprogrammed the transmission. Problem solved. Nice to have a smart sister that works at Ford !

When my 2010 started doing this at 135k, I thought I was hitting some rumble strips. Dealer had no idea what it was. I thought it was a misfire also until I noticed the tach. After seeing the RPMs go slightly up when it happened, I realized it was a clutch slipping and only during TCC lock-up. It only does it at the slightest amount of throttler. I have learned to just goose it a little more. There is some stuff on the market called Shudder Fixx I think. It is supposed to help. I had the latest trans calibration loaded from Ford which did not help. It seems that the lock up clutch just needs more pressure at low throttle. Does it between 30-60mph. Tow-haul mode seems to help. Another great video Brian.

so history repeats itself, I couldn't say how many torque converters I changed in the old Crown Victorias and similar because of the shudder issues back in the early '90s. Great info as always, Thanx

It never ceases to amaze me how many problems can be traced to the automatic transmission in cars. I've had a couple of the simpler automatics and had troubles with some of them; but for me, it is manual transmissions for me.

Bravo, Brian! You really know your shit, dude!
That Ford software continues to impress me. Substance over window dressing.
I've watched you use it for years gathering evidence and data.

See ya layda 😎

Brian, so what is the fix here? You have diagnosed it very well. Is this a calibration fix, torque converter replacement, ??? Thank you so much!

Please always include the mileage of the vehicle. It gives us a better idea of when to expect an issue like this. Thanks!

I've found that Fords, as well as various other manufacturers, will not set a trans code/engine light until the slip is beyond 400 rpm. By then, you know from the seat of you pants that the converter is shot. But for intermittent complaints, I've found that at light loads having the a/c on will recreate the problem every time, from speeds of 38 to 45 mph. I'm not sure why, but at highway speeds, even light loads, the lock up seems to hold, even when the converter clutches are failing.

Very nice explanation and demonstration, sure appreciate your sharing of experiences. I have observe slight variations in tachometer RPM in another older vehicle as the transmission was shifting gears. Pending failure? Further investigation showed it was just a normal condition as the Torque Converter Clutch was being modulated intentionally by the computer to allow a bit of slippage during the shift, softening the shift. Its amazing what you can see.

AWESOME!! My ‘10 has been doing this for a while. I cleaned the throttle body with no luck so then suspected some kind of transmission issue. I’ll hook up the FORScan and perform your test but I’m sure that’s the problem. That said, what is the fix, R&R the torque converter?

My dad's 2010 F150 also had a TPMS issue, looks like it's a fairly common issue on the 12th gen F150s!
For the record I tried to reprogram all TPMS sensors and only the FR sensor wouldn't give in

Can you do a video on replacing the torque converter? That would be very helpful. My 16 F150 with 106k just started to vibrate on highway under quarter throttle or so. I added shutter fix and it stopped. I have done a pan drop and filter change hoping that it will correct the issue but am preparing for when the torque converter needs to be replaced.

Another great video. Experienced this on my 07 expedition. Would surge and vibrate in partial lock-up (about 400 mA TC solenoid current) but would go away at full lock ( about 700 mA TC solenoid current). TCC slip spiking upto 100 rpm at partial with zero slip at full.. Could drive down the highway at 60+ no problem, but would be a problem at 40-55 mph.

11-17 Explorers and Edges with the 6F50/55 trans would do this too
