1689 LBCF Chapter 26 Paragraph 11-12
"Preaching ministry for non-pastors (Para. 11)
Although it be incumbent on the bishops or pastors of the churches, to be instant in preaching the word, by way of office, yet the work of preaching the word is not so peculiarly confined to them but that others also gifted and fitted by the Holy Spirit for it, and approved and called by the church, may and ought to perform it."
- The pastors should be instant in prraching the word in season or out of season.
- Preaching ministry is not exclusive to pastors.
Acts 11:19-21
- It is the church's duty to recognize gifted men in the church to preach the gospel and for mission.
- 2 Tim 2:2 - The church must train men who will be able to teach also.
Church discipline (Para. 12)
"As all believers are bound to join themselves to particular churches, when and where they have opportunity so to do; so all that are admitted unto the privileges of a church, are also under the censures and government thereof, according to the rule of Christ."
Marks of the healthy church (essential & continuing)
1. Preaching of the word - purity of worship
2. Administration of the Sacrements
3. Church discipline
- If you are in Christ, you must be part of the local church, His body.
- The evidence of God's love for the church is discipline (Heb 12:6)
- The evidence of God's judgment is the absence of fatherly discipline.
- It is a proof of God's judicual abandoment when a man continues in sin. God gives Him over (Rom 1:24,26,28)
- Church discipline is not optional. It can be avoided but because of sin, it must be applied.
- Formative discipline - parents should form/shape the minds of their children (scripted & unscripted).
- There is no basis for corrective without formative discipline.
- In the same way, the church must be formed/trained up by the Word.
- The church member must subject to the discipline and censure of the church
- The church is not the source of the truth and should not invent truth. She must support and uphold the truth (1 Tim 3:15).
- The church ought to conduct herself in the household of God.
- Discipline is instruction and training.
- Such formative discipline is part of the experience of being loved by God through the means of grace (e.g. preaching of the Word).
- The primary avenue of God's formative discipline is the faithful proclamation of the Word Sunday after Sunday.
- Parenting is not only about providing the temporal needs of the family.
- The church must be taught that she may learn to respond to the issues of life.
- A healthy church member recognizes the need of discipline to correct erring ones, rebuke rebel hearts, etc. He sees the discipline of the church as an essential means of grace.
