LBCF 26.3
The purest churches under heaven are subject to mixture and error;1 and some have so degenerated as to become no churches of Christ, but synagogues of Satan;2 nevertheless Christ always hath had and ever shall have a kingdom in this world, to the end thereof, of such as believe in him and make profession of his name.3
There is no perfect church under heaven.
There can be a member a local church who is not a true member of the invisible church.
1. The Necessity for Continuing Reformation of the Church
- The reformed church is always reforming.
- We are not blind followers to religion. We should align ourselves to the Word always.
Hence, we hold to Sola Scriptura, it is the ONLY God-breathed revelation. The church submits to the Word.
- Psalm 119:59 - A lofty declaration about God's Word.
- There are seasons of growth and struggles. The war in constant and our weapon is the Word of God. The Word of God is the Sword of the spirit not tradition.
2. The Reality of Mixture and Error in the Church
- The painful reality is that churches can sin and apostatize. (5//7 churches were problematic except Smyrna and Philadelphia)
- These are sobering statistics that call us to humbly evaluate ourselves.
- This mixture is the reason why we need churc discipline.
- Some churches has become so degenerated that they become no church at all.
- How grievous it is to see churches who once hold to precious doctrines now swept away by worldly philisophies.
3. The Perpetuity of Christ's Kingdom through the Church
- Despite the church's fallibility, the Kingdom of Christ remains.
- Matthew 28:18-20 - Christ promised His accompanying presence to the church till the end.
- We can pray for the promise of perpetuity in the local church.
