St. Elmo Steak House in Indianapolis is a James Beard award-winning restaurant celebrated for its delicious steaks, but more widely known for its extremely spicy Shrimp Cocktail. It was once deemed the “spiciest food in the world” by Travel Channel writer Allison Stein Wellner. Insider producer Jake Gabbard traveled to Indianapolis, got advice from competitive eater Joey Chestnut, tried this fabled appetizer, and ultimately decided if it was Worth The Drive.

Anyway, like I was sayin', shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That- that's about it.

I travel to Indianapolis every year to attend a trade show, and I never miss a chance to visit St Elmo's, and the shrimp cocktail hits me the same way every years. It's like a total shock, something I've never experienced, and worth every bite. If you've never been, GO.

I had a feeling that the host was going to be over dramatic when I saw the intro. And I was not wrong..

Horse radish is an interesting spice
Unlike peppers, you feel the heat in your nose for some reason 😹🙌

I've been to St. Elmo twice and tried the shrimp once. If you eat a normal amount of cocktail sauce or even *_scrape off most of it, _* it's tasty. No need to ruin delicious jumbos just for the gimmick. And the Prime ribeye? Worth the hype.

5:25 - is the mark where he tries the shrimp for the first time.

Been there several times, and have eaten their sauce for years. Its amazing. It is not like eating a chili pepper where it lingers. It's a 15 second rush.

I’ve had this shrimp cocktail from St Elmo’s. It’s extremely delicious and does have a bite from the horseradish, but calling it “the spiciest food in the world” is some truly basic Foodie Karen bullshit. That person obviously has never tasted any cuisine from Korea, Mexico, Thailand, India or pretty much anywhere outside the US if they believe that.

I will add a tip when eating hot & spicy food.
Eat yoghurt or drink milk while consuming it. The proteins in dairy cancel out the heat.

That's my city, and my absolute FAVORITE shrimp cocktail! Absolutely adore it. Take some of the sauce and add it into their bean soup, bomb.

I ate there with a work group. Most didn’t like it but I thought it was great. Not a huge fan of shrimp cocktail in general but if you put the shrimp on a cracker it dulls the horseradish and it’s soooo good. Definitely my favorite shrimp cocktail I’ve ever had!
