Introduction
This tutorial will guide you through the process of raking locks open, a fast technique suitable for low-security locks. Raking is a valuable skill for locksmithing enthusiasts and can be useful in various real-world scenarios, such as lockouts or security assessments.
Step 1: Understand When to Use Raking
* Raking is effective primarily for low-security locks.
* It's important to assess whether raking is appropriate for the specific lock you are dealing with.
* Avoid using raking on high-security locks, as they often have features designed to thwart this method.
Step 2: Gather Your Tools
* Acquire a lock pick set that includes rakes.
* Recommended rakes
*
* Sparrows Worm Rake: Ideal for quick raking.
* Octo Rake: Offers versatility and efficiency.
* City Rake: Effective for standard pin tumbler locks.
* Familiarize yourself with each rake's design and application.
Step 3: Grip the Lock and Tension Wrench
* Hold the lock firmly to keep it stable.
* Use a tension wrench to apply slight tension in the direction the lock turns.
* Ensure your tension is firm but not excessive; too much tension can hinder the raking process.
Step 4: Apply the Raking Technique
* Insert the rake into the lock above the tension wrench.
* Use a back-and-forth motion with the rake
*
* Start at the back of the lock and pull it towards you.
* Repeat this motion several times while maintaining consistent tension with the wrench.
* Experiment with different rakes to find which works best for the lock type you’re tackling.
Step 5: Practice and Refine Your Skills
* Raking requires practice to master the technique and gain a feel for different locks.
* Set aside time to practice on various locks to understand their behavior.
* Note that success can vary based on the lock’s condition and security features.
Conclusion
Raking locks open is a quick and effective method for low-security locks when applied correctly. Remember to choose the right tools and ensure proper technique for the best results. As you practice, you will become more adept at recognizing which locks can be raked and how to efficiently open them. For further improvement, consider exploring more advanced lock picking techniques and tools.

Man ever since I started using lighter tension it just works so much better and puts less stress on my hands, thank you so much and one time I tried to “saw” rake my lock too hard and accidentally bent my rake nearly 90 degrees but it’s bent back

I did it! I was having a super difficult time but noticed you said get those top pins to jump above. I flipped the lock over so pins are on top and boom. Thank you!

The other day, one lock opened in seconds with my rake, but two that I have opened before just would not give. I think a lot depends on my mood and attitude at the moment. 🤔 I work repairing houses and often just use my magic keys instead of driving across town to get a key. Oh, and both stubborn houses are now ready to sell. The one that opened still needs 1 small repair.
