I test Three different 7 irons with 3 very different lofts to show you exactly how big a difference they all make!

Just for anyone wondering, our GC2 machine can’t measure Clubhead speed, it predicts it based off of ball speed. That’s why the Clubhead is higher on the rogue x. They all had same length and same shafts in so Clubhead would of been 95mph with all the clubs. Hope that clears things up. 👍

This is why I like my blades. 4 degrees between each loft through the set. These power lofted clubs leave you nowhere else to go at the top of the bag. So 6-5-4-3 irons go around the same distance 2 degrees ish between lofts is just too close

Just ordered the i500’s being a 6 handicap I really like how they brought down my spin and launch angle which has been my problem. While I don’t need the extra distance it wasn’t an issue adding a few extra yards imo . I also had no problem controlling distance. Haven’t tested them on the course so we will have to see how they handle in the rough

34° 7 iron and 4 degrees between the rest. Perfect loft separation for me. Ben hogan!!

Can you please test the 6 iron blade, 7 iron ping and 8 iron callaway? The lofts will be roughly the same then will be cool to see how much difference there is then

Yup, my irons are traditionally lofted. I've noticed too that the shafts are longer by standard on new clubs as well. I have to explain this to people I play with after out driving them all day then taking more club on par 3s.

I went on ebay and found a set that I used to have when I played well a few years ago. Mizuno MP 30'S. Love them. No idea of the lofts but guessing will be standard. I'm not bothered that they are about 10 yards shorter per club than some irons I have used in the last few years. ⛳

Most testers have concluded a blade is not any more workable than a game improvement club. That’s just a myth. It’s totally on the player to control face and path.

The peak height and descent angle of those Pings is insane - 49 meters average peak height with 53 degree descent angle - wow. My Mizuno Hot Metal Pros 7 iron was 33meter peak height & 177 yard carry with 5800rpm backspin at 30 degrees loft - had it increased to 32 degrees which gave me 171 yards and 6100 spin. If there was any wind on the course, those Pings would be unplayable.

Excellent information. As a senior (73) with single digit index, I have the stronger lofted irons. As you mentioned my irons start at 6 iron due to the strong lofts. As long as a golfer knows how far they hit a specific club, the number on the club is not an issue. One a side note, I still get sufficient spin on the strong lofted irons.

Great timing as I am looking for new irons due to increase in club head speed meaning I have the wrong shaft - yes I know I could get the current irons re-shafted but new irons are shiny!!

I do not like the look of the Rogue. top line is way too thick for me.

Sadly, my fit is in the morning. I guess I will have to get up early and do some stretching

I dug out an old set of Bob Toski Irons from about 30 years ago. OMG they are so chunky with one of the thickest top lines I've ever seen. I can't believe they used to look good to me. LOL. The loft is printed on the irons. The 8 iron is 39 degrees loft, which is more loft than most modern 9 irons.

Incredible long hitters here in the comments. Most people hit their 7-iron longer than average PGA-player, wow.

I use a older set of Adams from 2010 before loft jacking occurred. 7 iron is 34 about 165-170 for me and my 4 iron is 23 degrees.

Great visual to show what manufacturers an do to potentially mislead a purchaser

You may have missed the most important factor here - club head speed. Slower swing speed players use more lofted drivers to gain distance. However, club manufacturers deloft irons for game improvement irons. This doesn't make any sense. Slower swing speed players need more lofted irons.

Saw this and immediately had to watch. 35/31/27 was 7/6/5. This, listen to this, could not agree more. Hence rescue/hybrid have now got lots of loft options. Simon spot on, if you go for strong loft i.e. 7 is really a 5 with wrong number on the bottom. Best bit of advice, in my opinion, is afternoon fit and make sure you hit yours at the end, versus recommended. Every fitting ever...let's start with yours. Yep, get you at your worst with yours, then when warm, get the proposed new club out. Please watch this if you are going to get fitted for new irons.

Unpopular opinion: "Blades(/clubs with less forgiving lofts) are only made for, and used by, 40% of tour players".
I disagree. Golf is hard but it's a competition between you and yourself.

Play with the clubs you feel comfortable with. There's too much talk about forgiveness, but it's all down to you and your swing and/or what you're looking for. Cavity backs or not, you choose. Would you rather smack a ball 20 yards further in the woods (buy a book of mushrooms) or getting a miserable 20 yard shot which creates a beam along the staff that tells you your shot was miserable? I don't care what you choose, but choose your own club independent of what anyone else says.

My personal advice to everyone is learning the hard way - start with blades. E.g. if you're taught, and later on know how, to park between two cars with a truck you're better off trying it with a Fiat - and vice versa. If you already know how to strike a ball, then I, nevertheless, suggest trying blades. A bladed 7 iron hasn't the same loft as a cavity backed 7 iron. Maybe a bladed 7 iron isn't going as far as your old one but just change it up a notch, to a 6 or a 5 iron, and enjoy the game.

There's plenty of blades you can pick up for a cheap price. You don't need the latest version of any set of blades.

Take care and be safe!

From another one, with love,

Very interesting and although I’m not a great golfer I have problems accepting the lower lifts to gain distance. I’m 73 and don’t hit the ball as long as I used to even with a slightly stronger seven iron good thing I carry a six iron to go my old seven iron distance. Why hasn’t this game standardized lofts on clubs so everyone knows what is being hit when you watch events? Also have you ever tested Orland clubs which are made in England?
