This PING golf irons comparison takes a deep drive into PING's iron technology over the past few decades leading up to the new G425 irons released in 2021. 2nd Swing master fitter Thomas Campbell begins with the Eye 2 irons, originally released in the 1980s, and also tests the i3 Oversize, G5, G20, and G irons.

PING irons have always performed well, especially in the areas of forgiveness and distance. Campbell puts each model to the test here with the help of Trackman in this golf irons comparison.

Really amazing how far ahead the Ping Eye 2 technology was for its time. I still have a bag of Ping Eye 2s that I will play from time to time for fun...i love how consistent they are for distance carry vs. some of the hotter more modern clubs. I can count on my 7 iron to go about 145yds every swing with the Eye 2s. Great video.

I'll never understand why people think its better to hit a 9 iron 175. The majority of rec golfers' approach shots are from 175 and under. Wouldn't it make sense to have more clubs in that range? The old lofts just make more sense to me! And, new clubs attempt to do this with the added u-wedges, sand wedges, lob wedges, etc.

Thank you. Good comparison. Still gonna keep playing my Ping Eye 2s.

I just got my G20s reshafted and regripped, and was kind of regretting putting that amount of money in when I could have bought newer ones. But after seeing this video I don’t feel so bad anymore, thanks !

From just reading charts, if you have G20 or older, just skip the 7 iron and club up to get "modern" lofts. Actually, why does it matter at all? If you need a certain distance, you just grab the club that hits that distance for you? Who cares if it is a 7 iron or a 5 iron?

Great video. I wish you had taken out the i3 miss hit instead of letting it skew the data set.

These comparisons are great. Forgiveness is SO important.

EXACTLY what I've been wanting to see, thank you! I have an Eye 2 set, a G iron set, and no way I need a 425! Love the feel of the G irons, and they soar, too. Hard to beat for a higher handicapper like myself.

Great review. I am impressed just how competitive the revolutionary Ping Eye 2 remains. I have a set in my garage 2-SW, but the shafts have rusted so I don't play them now. It took about 25 years before I felt that a better iron was available, but only marginally. Now I have the original 2015 year Callaway Epic 3-AW.

Super happy to see this test! I am a 16 handicap. I used ping eye 2 from 1986 for about 20 years. I went from there to ping i10 and then to Ping g10 (both used). Not sure I could tell a difference. I then got fitted for ping g420. The feel was terrible and I’m not sure anything changed. Still carry my g10 3 iron. In the end you sort of proved a point. The irons from today, especially The Ping Eye 2, hasn’t come very far in 35 years. 6 yards farther in 35 years???? That’s likely on the green bud or I club up. 3-5 yards more forgiving is a tough call with the 10k dollars easy spent by people upgrading there gear In a 35 year span. The 420 feel is trash compared to the eye 2....

Eye 2 s are simply the greatest irons ever made, even today there's at least 5-6 good golf members at any club still using They've saved some money because they're so good after 40 years

Been using my G15 for years and just went back to my eye 2 irons, shot 81 and I think that’s good for a 72 year old man!

Awesome video. Thank You. I have the G20. I love these irons. I upgraded to hybrids from 6 to 3 iron. This improved my game.

I have PingEye2 and they do hit shorter, but as stated elsewhere, I just club down to get more distance. It’s all about knowing your clubs.

Great review....I play with mizuno jpx921 forged but just bought a set of ping eye 2 + irons...went down the range for a first hit and for 30 years plus iron you can't half get them up in the air...plus I get mote spin off the 8 9 P than I do with my own ill regrip these and take them on the course...

Thank you for this, I've had a set of Jack Nicklaus clubs since forever. Just got fitted yesterday at the Md location and picked up the Ping G. Irons are forgiving and gave me an additional 15 yards on carry. Excited for my next golf lesson this week.

Thanks ! I've been playing 38 years now and have had many sets of clubs and all the top brands But all though my set now is the Ping I3 irons I have had two other sets of Pings over the years but these I3 irons just fit me They are the White dot and work very well for me, Ok thanks for the test it was very interesting .

Looking at the dispersion of each club, I’d go for the g5 because they are grouped up the closest. At least that’s how I judge what I want. The more predictable the club, the better. That leads to more greens hit.

Liked the comparison. We should keep in mind though that testing a club from the 'i' eye range will give lower trajectory and less forgiveness than a 'g' range of iron as it was essentially a player's iron. But I liked those numbers from yesteryear, seems like not much has changed except the number on the bottom of the club. Great swinging by the way 👍

people talk about the lofts getting stronger. In reality what has happened is that the gap wedge was added which replaced the pitching wedge and the rest of the clubs where given stronger lofts The seven iron has become the six iron of old. If you will look the shaft of the older six is the same length as the shaft of the newer seven irons. In reality the irons have not changed that much they have just been given a new number where the six of old is now the seven with the newer clubs. A fair comparison would be to hit the irons with the same loft.
