The problem with Richard Dawkins

Richard Dawkins is a very clever man, but is unfortunately let down by both his lack of scientific knowledge and also by having a bee in his bonnet about religion.

Simon, a slight correction on your principles of flight of a helicopter. The cross section of a rotor blade isnt curved on top and flat on the bottom like a fixed wing. They tend to be symmetrical. The change of pitch of the blade either cyclically or collectively is what creates lift 🙂

The Bernoulli effect only contributes some of the lift generated by helicopter rotors. Most of the lift is due to the angle of the blades. It's in recognition of this that the angle of the blade changes from steep near the hub, where the blade moves slowly, to shallow at the tips, where it moves quickly. The twist in the blade ensures the stress of lift is shared evenly along it.
Furthermore the helicopter pilot can regulate lift by controlling the pitch of the blades in flight.

So Dawkins is quite right about this.

As much as Dawkins may not be fully competent within religious fields of study, he has done an immense job of criticizing the Creationist worldview, and clearing the ground for critical thinking for many of us.

Richard Dawkins is a classic example of how IQ and intelligent thought are not at all the same thing.
