Renting college textbooks is a good one that people often overlook

Who hasn't rented?!?! Can we all be real here!!
I'm renting now and looking to buy and just told my brother to stick it- he said we need a house- as if a town home isn't good is equity and I know what I can afford. I'm no longer letting others project their values on to me and my family because of u you! Thank you Rachel!!

We're debt free and I drive a ten year old minivan w/ 483, 000 miles. Last Jan we took a family trip to Nashville (to do our debt free scream in the lobby), so we rented a nice new van with all the newest features. It sounds expensive ($750 for four days), but better than $25 to $35K for a new vehicle. There are more important things on our list right now.

When I was in High school I got my prom dresses from a consignment store. I paid $60 for a very high end dress. No one knew the difference and everyone thought I'd gotten a super expensive dress. Wearing an already worn dress one more time didn't depreciate the value that much and I was able to turn around and sell it for $50. Meaning I spent $10 on my prom dress. I only would've worn it once anyway and I have plenty of photos to make me happy.

we've been renting a car/van/SUV for more than a year whenever we need it... sold our car last year to settle some debts and since we usually ride public transportation, we rent car/van/SUV during our yearly family not-so-far-away-out-of-town, no maintenance problems, no monthly amortization and I could chat with my family while enjoying the view!

That's what my parents said about renting so they wanted us to buy a house when we got married - and they helped us do that. Looking back now [17 years later] we were not ready for maintenance costs, etc. that go with a house. And we had an awful, awful time trying to sell it. The past 2 years we rented a house and were able to just move out and move on. So I'm glad we were renters. I'd love to try renting clothes. I just need a fancy even to go to now. :)

I'm a renter of an apartment and it has really been an eye opener in terms of seeing what the neighborhood/neighbors are REALLY like! I know I would have regretted if I bought in this area, so renting a home helps you to see if you really like the place/area before committing 100%!

I'm a wedding photographer and I rent most of my lenses!! I love being able to have all the top of the line equipment before making a big investment. Not to mention, I get insurance so I don't have to worry about a 2, 000 dollar piece of equipment breaking and having to save up all over again! Of course I've saved up for the stuff I own currently and am saving to eventually purchase my favorite equipment but for now I can have my nifty fifty and rent the rest! Love all your vlogs.

We plan to rent our house and not buy for several years because my husband is in the military and we move so often. Thanks for the reminder that renting is not bad! It's easy to compare yourself to those around us in similar life stages and feel bad about not owning a home yet.

When I tell people that I plan to sell my house and rent instead, they tell me I'm throwing my money away. I tell them my freedom is priceless.

I also did a video comparing renting to buying and it's all about where you live and some personal factors.

Here is a great tip for those with bad credit that i do, i bought a town house, held it for five years then sold it, made a nice profit, free up myself with lot of cash flow, now i am renting again. It feels good to have cash because that gives me lots of freedom. I have no debts.

I'm debt free, renting a cheap apt at 15% of my income, and saving the rest😆😭

Hi Rachel, we actually rent cars when we need them. We live in a city (Munich, Germany) where we don't actually need a car to get to work, school, shops etc. So we don't bother owning a car. Whenever we need a vehicle we simply go to the local rental and get one for a day, weekend, sometimes a couple of weeks if there are lots of errands. It's inexpensive and we can do it WITHOUT a credit card. We're on first name terms with the staff. We also rang your Dad last year and did our debt free scream :) Best wishes

I rent my home! I live in NYC and have a varying income. Aside from the fact that buying a home in this city is prohibitively expensive, most places for sal are co-ops where the building makes tons of rules about how you have to live your life. I also LOVE that if there is a problem with plumbing or a leak in the ceiling, I can call the super and it gets taken care of, with no cost to me. I may buy if I ever leave the city, but for me, renting is the best choice for now!

We rent an apartment. Don't have to pay for maintenance, I'm in law school while hubby makes our only income, and we have no idea where we want to settle down after school. No maintenance costs, no crazy fluctuating property tax (we're in a HCOL area), and the freedom to move whenever we feel like with no selling hassle? Worth it!

My husband and I rented an apartment for 2 years when first getting married. Just bought our first house a month ago and we're completing our fully funded emergency fund NEXT MONTH! We are so thankful to have found FPU while engaged!!! We are definitely "weird" compared to most of our friends!!!

Buying a lightly used camera lens on eBay then re-selling it on eBay in 3 months, 6 month, or 1 year is typically cheaper than renting a lens for just a week. Decent lenses typically don't depreciate much if at all in that time frame, it's the huge eBay selling fees that cost you. I've 'rented' a lot of Canon lenses via eBay.
