If you or someone you know is dealing with a challenging situation and could benefit from additional support, consider talking to one of the 10,000 licensed online counselors at BetterHelp.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V) is a resource that mental health professionals and doctors use to diagnose mental illness. The book helps mental health providers develop treatment plans for their clients. It notes symptoms of each disorder, and what to look out for when diagnosing an individual. For a person to have a diagnosis, they need to meet particular criteria or display specific symptoms.

With a diagnosis, there are specific criteria that a person needs to meet. Regarding any mental health disorder, it needs to cause significant distress to a person’s life. It’s considered a diagnosis when the disorder impacts an individual’s life to the point where they have difficulty functioning. If that’s the case, then the health professional will look at the person’s symptoms and determine what their diagnosis is, and what the treatment plan is. If you find that your mental health issues are making it hard to function in your life, consider meeting with an online therapist. You can learn strategies to manage your emotions, and develop a healthy way of coping with life challenges.

I must admit I'm guilty of diagnosing myself and others. If I read or hear something about a mental or physical disease or illness, my mind starts racing and I think that I or someone close to me has it! Thank you for this helpful video - It showed me that I really need to work on this and realize that not everyone suffers from every kind of illness!

Wow thank you so much. My professor he was in his 60s a previous clinical and medical psychologist. I remember he showed us this massive book and stated “it keeps getting bigger and bigger there’s nothing wrong it just means we are learning more.”

No matter what disorder one believes is going through, it is always wise to consult a licenced professional because sometimes things may not be exactly as they look

I really appreciate psychology and I enjoy researching mental illness using the DSM-V. I try very hard not to allow myself to self-diagnose as well. Psychology is very important to me and I have a lot of respect for professionals, but I only really look at fictional characters and how accurate/ inaccurate a mental illness is portrayed (especially DID) rather than actual people I know. I’m glad that you posted this video because I have friends who have self-diagnosed and caused a lot of problems for themselves because of it.

@4:40 I could have kissed her, irony notwithstanding. It's the second half of the sentiment that is so frequently forgotten. You don't need a disorder to need help. If you need help, it doesn't mean you have a disorder.

Thank you for the clear explaination. I live in a community that often comments that someone is on the 'spectrum' just because of a quirk in their personality. Mentioning the need of 7 symptoms or the significant distress or impairment in areas of life, help clarify the issue.
