Well you can improve your mother tongue by learning another language which is very closely or somewhat closely related.. because a lot of European languages are influenced by Latin or Greek etc. or some slavic languages especially orthodox are heavily influenced by Old Slavic & Church Slavonic etc. I improved my mother tongue (srb).. by learning Ruski.. because a lot of primary russ words that they use more often are not primary in srb but used sometimes & vice versa.. Or some words became archaic in one language & are still used often in the other etc.

I’m bilingual English/Portuguese, yet I’m not actually 100% fluent in either and I always feel a little “languageless”! The best language I communicate in is when I’m speaking to someone who also speaks both Portuguese and English 😅 Does anybody else feel the same?

Native speakers often grow up speaking the dialect of their parents and learn the standard language only when their formal schooling begins. That's why, you often come across non-native speakers being more grammatically correct than native speakers themselves. However, non-native speakers often struggle to have a good grasp of the non-standard varieties of the language (dialects).

Hey Wouter, I think you could make a video on omegle shocking people speaking their native language, it would be awesome!

It's interesting what you said about the genetive case in Dutch.
I'm native English, studied so many languages, but I find grammar very difficult to understand in many languages, even my own language. I studied a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) two years ago and it was that course that taught me more about English grammar.

Im Russian, and for me giant help in learning Spanish was knowing some scientific and formal vocabulary in Russian since it's mostly based on Latin roots. And also knowing what all indoeuropean languages still have same similarities, so it's cool to recognise some of them ancient roots in other language.

It's funny when you find a new word you can understand in the foreign language but don't what the word would be in your native language so you Google it and it's a word you've never seen before so you look it up in the dictionary and it has the right meaning. I had that happen with a Greek word, αγιογράφος, today that meant saint writer, which apparently there is a word "hagiographer" in English. Lol Never heard that word before in my life.
