How I Learned to Speak English: Tips and Tricks for Clear Communication

In this video, I share my experience of learning three different languages and explain why accent should never be considered a problem.

I had to learn two completely different sets of mouth movements before I had to learn a third set for the English language, causing me to have a very thick accent.

I explain how articulation, not accent, is the issue, and how enhancing my articulation helped me communicate more clearly. I encourage you to embrace your accent - it's what makes you unique!

If you have ever wondered if your accent is a problem, this video will give you some valuable insights!

I used the same method as you when I practiced presentations in English during my early days: watching Disney channel (mostly), combined with imitating all the dialogues, sometimes acting in front of the mirror, or imagined being interviewed by someone on a certain subject. Imitation is the first step in learning anything, really. Another aspect that I think worth mentioning is that by leaving the TV/ radio on and not actively listening to it (while doing chores, for example), your subconscious still picks up a fair amount of how natives deliver their spoken language. This is inactive learning - just like how a child must be able to hear in order to learn how to speak in the first place.

One other thing that I did was learning rap songs. Yes, rap. Mostly Eminem, because I found his articulation the clearest. Once I've had enough habit of mouth movement from rapping, my accent came out more naturally. Rapping as cardio for your mouth muscles works wonder.

Vinh, I watched this multiple times already. I'm on Day 3 now, reading tech article outloud and record it. It took me aroun 7-15 minutes to read the whole article slowly and with exageration. Pray for me to be consistent to do this for 3 months onwards.

Thankyou Vinh :D

Yeah! It's true. I am an English pronunciation teacher. When I coached my students in pronunciation, I coached them first to exaggerate our set of mouth movements. Then they can do well after 1.5 - 2 months.

When I was a kid, my father would always tell me that I should read out loud, but I couldn't understand why. Now, it's making sense to me.

This is what my Father keeps telling me, but I never understood what he meant by moving your mouth more. This is the perfect time to learn about this because recently I had joined a specific youth leadership team and I always feared that people could not fully understand what I was saying because I am to quiet or smudging my words together. Great stuff man! Very thankful to have found your channel 🙏

Hi Vinh.
At work, I have a coworker who approached me concerned about her accent. I've sent her to this video and made a deal with her to meet every day to read for articulation. She is excited to try! I'll keep you updated!

English is my second language. Speaking English has been really difficult for me, especially when it comes to conveying my ideas to others in a clear and pronounced manner. Your advice has proven to be incredibly helpful and practical. I'll attempt to imitate a native speaker. Likewise, I'll read passages from the novels I like the most. Thanks for your sharing your methods. Keep up the good work!

Mouth movement of english words while reading is great to know. This concept is i was missing to practice even though i heard somewhere elss this one.

You're the only top life coach, I love to watch his videos.

Edit: Feedback
I did this exercise, my tongue feels light and kinda smaller. Also my mouth is lighter, this can be a great tool for my singing too. I recommend to keep a water with you.

We are so much creatures of learned habits, after a while we believe that our way of communication is who we are, even if we don't like it, but like all habits it can be changed, if we really take an interest and learn the necessary skills until it becomes a new habit. Thanks for pointing us the in right direction Vinh 🙂

"Don't be so attached to who you currently are, give your future version a chance" really moved me (I just watched your reel on Facebook yesterday by chance), so motivational that I believe someday I can speak English freely and smoothly as you do. By the way, your Vietnamese accent sounds quite lovely, I can tell as a Vietnamese person. You have one more follower!

Wow, I was surprised when you said you are Teochew nang and also keeping your native language until now and Vietnamese as well. As you know Chinese people who are living in Vietnam, especially in Saigon, have not kept their own native language, they have changed to the Vietnamese language as their first language in recent years. I'm Hokkien nang, and English is my fourth language after Cantonese and Vietnamese. Love to watch your channel and the content you made, that's inspiring me!

As an American I also think I could use some improvement to my articulation. This seems like a fun exercise. Thanks for another great video as usual!
