A new world order is emerging, shaped by an unseen yet critical resource: semiconductors. These tiny microprocessors power nearly every aspect of modern life, from computers and smartphones to cars, refrigerators, and even advanced military technologies.

Chip War
Year: 2023
Duration: 52 minutes
Production: Babel Doc
Director: Nicolas Vescovacci
Language: English
Country of Production: France

The global shortage of these essential components has exposed the fragility of supply chains, driving inflation, stalling industries, and intensifying geopolitical tensions, particularly between the United States and China.

In 2021 alone, an estimated 10 million cars were not produced due to a lack of semiconductors. Yet while demand for these cutting-edge chips has soared, their production remains concentrated in only a handful of locations, with 63% of all chips produced in Taiwan. This dependency has made Taiwan not only the nerve center of the global tech economy but also a flashpoint in the ongoing power struggle between superpowers.

Chip War explores how this reliance on a single island has placed the world’s economic and technological stability at risk. With Taiwan at the heart of a potential geopolitical conflict, the stakes could not be higher. This documentary examines the history, science, and strategic importance of semiconductors, detailing the efforts of governments and industries to diversify production and reduce dependency on a fragile supply chain.

Through expert interviews and in-depth analysis, the film reveals how the semiconductor shortage is reshaping global relations and affecting daily life. From stalled car production lines to rising prices of consumer goods, the battle for microprocessors has already begun. But what solutions exist to secure this critical resource, and at what cost? Chip War provides a gripping look at one of the most urgent and complex challenges of our time.

As someone who studied some electronics courses, I absolutely disgusted by the countries plans to take their physical war into the electronics and microchips war. The world has to put its differences aside and develop technological advances together.

It’s because people (especially American politicians) want to get the most amount of money for the least amount of effort. They don’t care whether or not they break the law, as long as people keep voting for them. Take the health insurance industry for example. Why did premiums increase by hundreds of percentage points as soon as the government took over the management of said industry? There is no such thing as freedom anymore.

"China resorting to violence to further its chip dominance".
Just ask yourself which countries in the world have started and or have gone to war in the last 2 decades? Stretch it out to 3 decades and still China doesn't make it to that list. So who's actually instigating war?

I'm curious on how everything will turn out in the long run. Now that China has taken the lead in AI, in a much simpler, accurate and cost-effective way. It's good to see some of these jobs coming here to America, and Europe. I know TSMC in Taiwan is extremely secretive in their processes, which may be somewhat problematic in finding employees that can keep their mouths shut even when money is waved in their faces. Asian people tend to pride themselves more in their work, than in their bank account balances.

I'm sure we'll see an increase in prices as well, and all those government subsidies are very unlikely to be returned, but at the same time, it'll give us more security, and stability in the advances of technology. Then there is the hope of seeing more electronics being produced here in the U.S, hopefully creating more skilled, and better paying jobs.

The chip war is fierce competition at it's best and currently there's a fierce battle between

Apple A18 pro
Media Tek dimensity 9400
Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 4

And in the near future that competition will be even more fierce when all 3 companies transition from the 3nm node process to the 2nm node process. Also within a few years photonics will have replaced most of the electrical connections. Fierce competition like this escalates technology.
