Public Defenders are facing soaring caseloads, and flatlining budgets, and with 80% of all criminal defendants in the US unable to afford a lawyer, the system is collapsing.

With the Constitutional right to fair representation in a court of law in jeopardy, correspondent Cord Jefferson heads to one of the worst hit states to see how overworked and underpaid public defenders is grinding the legal system to a halt.

VICE airs on HBO Fridays at 11pm.

america would rather see it's citizens in jail than at work or school.

That’s messed up.
In Indiana a few years back one of our judges was fired for just locking people up left and right, charging people with no less than at least 185 days in jail. Our jail was packed and overflowing with inmates that they literally had no more room. As I said he’s no longer a Judge.

Of course they are. And even better news! Some of these people are actually innocent because the trial hasn't happened yet.

LOL. If you think US prisons are overcrowded, check out prisons in other countries like the Philippines, Haiti, Thailand.

I was thrown in jail for an open container (not in a car, outside my house). That's not the most fucked up part though. They put a phone hold on me so I couldn't call anyone to come bail me out. Sat in a cell for nearly a week before seeing a judge. THEN even more fucked up they just dropped it and let me The prisons here are FUCKED

Being caught in that system I'm not really concerned about this issue. What I am concerned is when your inside how the justice system can't keep up with the workload it gives itself while quality and efficiency in the system struggles whether you're actually guilty or not. Like really, being stuck in limbo while they investigate if someone's guilty or not is baffling, justice seems like a lazy procrastinator.

Prisons are not supposed to be spacious and luxurious for people who cause harm to society. A shelter over their head and free regular meals from tax payers, they should count themselves fortunate
