Inside the women’s prison with a difference

Chickens, ducks, donkeys and a mini shopping village. Definitely not your usual prison – but HMP Foston Hall in Derbyshire is trying something different to help rehabilitate those serving time.

The women’s jail is running a unique project to build and run pop-up shops within the confine, aimed at preparing prisoners mentally to cope with normal life on release, and to gain the right skills to get employment.

Rehabilitation programs is a must. Part of the rehabilitation programs is having something set up where they can live or jobs programs or you'll have a lot of re-offenders.

We need a 5 year after release update on these women. I want to see construction workers and retail managers.

Reminder for all the angry men who are going to belt their way into this comment section to teach the darned no-good feminists their place - this is a prison - i.e. a place where your daily routine is entirely managed for you by a prison bureaucracy you have *no control over* and where, most critically, you are separated from everybody you know and love, for a period of time that *you have no control over.*

Perhaps instead of arguing that all women should have it as rough as the worst-treated men, *real* mens-rights advocates should be fighting to improve conditions across the board in Britain's prison system, and addressing the root causes for why men are disproportionately more likely to commit crimes in the first place (drugs abuse, poverty etc.) - just a thought. :)

Many of these woman have mental health issues that need to be resolved before they are released back into the community.

I think this is a really positive step in the right direction. Hopefully we'll see more of this, for both men and women prisoners. :) I get that some people are beyond help and will always be a danger to society, but I think a lot of people who end up being imprisoned could be saved. This is great! Keep up the good work. :)

Shes a beautiful person 💕 i wish we had leaders in our prisons more in America like her. Her heart is definitely in the right place and we need more souls like hers, and shes right! Her job is to rehabilitate! Punishing addicts wont help anyone but the billion dollar rich evil people that have stock money invested in private prisons and unfortunately here in America most of our prisons are absolute cash cows and the more prisoners the better in their eyes 😢

It would be good if M&S or Boux Avenue (for example) could train inmates in bra-fitting; they could fit their fellow prisoners as training for jobs in this area once released.

I believe it’s important to rehabilitate prisoners so that they can support themselves. Most deserve a new start. Punishing for the sake of it is fruitless unless the prisoners have committed heinous crimes.

Look at them being fed, clothed and treated to a life of riley. While good, honest people are struggling to eat.

Originally a detention centre for male  juveniles . I was there in 1970 as a 16 year old. That was a tough regime , Worse haircut ever, No smoking for the whole of your term , No T.V. . Radio 10 minutes  a day for the news  in the dining hall .Up at the crack of dawn and exercising in the yard whatever the weather . Everything at the double . Circuit training was brutal, Get caught cheating and everyone had to start from the beginning the god help you in the showers after you got caught you got a severe beating. Murderball every Saturday . Work a full day, Classes at night, Church on Sunday, Hardly anytime to get into trouble .
