Rick of The Luminary Shoppe has decided to retire and has agreed to place some of his lamps and equipment into the gift store we are remodeling, so he will remain a part of Joliet's history. So we're taking a quick tour through his shop and will show the progress on the gift store. Thanks for coming along!

Check out his videos at The Luminary Shoppe here on YouTube

Spring for mugs, tee-shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies.

I was always a real pleasure watching Rick building, repairing and restoring those beautiful lamps. A real shame he won't be doing any more but he certainly has earned, and deserves, a happy retirement. Thanks Rick, for many happy memories. And as someone else mentioned here, Dave and Rick, a pair of real craftsmen.

The idea of a manure spreader in an Ice Cream Parlor only works when it was restored by Dave.

To you and Rick, we are in a different era where computers have taken over. I am completely different than you fellows, millwright. I have tried to pass on the knowledge I have accumulated but people don't want to work with their hands anymore, very sad. I guess when they wake up and discover that a computer can't do what we do, they will wonder why we didn't teach them, very sad state of affairs.

For anyone that hasn't seen Rick's videos, I HIGHLY recommend you go take a look. Rick is truly a mastersmith on carriage lamps, and it's just extremely interesting to see. I learned quite a bit from them that I still use to make signs. Rick, sorry to see you go but I'm truly grateful you shared it with us. So guys, go take a look!

such a shame you guys never found apprentices to train. most young people today don't want to work for the years it takes to learn a complex trade at a salary that would work for your budgets. seems they want a "position" that has quick rise to a high salary and a short learning curve. they end up in the tech field or working for government.

Just a thought, perhaps a modest tv screen could be put in the display showing some of his videos so people will understand the context of the display.

As a 73 year old retired Architect, I totally relate to the feelings of a seasoned professional at the end of a long career. All that experience and knowledge to cease being used. Its melancholy

This is a special skill, very few people could do this.

Great to have a tour of the Luminary shop and explaining machines in more detail. Pleasantly surprised to see the Canada flag on back of his hat.! I have watched his channel and the quality of workmanship was of course second to none. Hopefully the lamps on the shelves will be cherished somewhere also. Happy retirement Rick and hopefully we will see you pop into the Engels Coach Shop on occasion.

Do the good folk of Joliet get together on weekends and do brain surgery for fun? LOL There's talent falling out of ya'lls pockets up there. I'm gonna zip up there and get me some of that water!

The last video I saw of Rick's was about 2 years ago. Sad to hear he is retiring, hopefully his knowledge and equipment is not lost.

Within the first 5 minutes of the video, one can see the thought that has gone into this building.

Rick's shop is amazing in that so many people want his products that he could make a living.

It strikes me that we are living in an upside down world today.
Im in an area that they have outlawed plastic grocery bags but if I want to replace the switch on an otherwise perfectly good Dewalt drill, they price the switch at 10 dollars less then a brand new drill. So what choice do you have but to dispose of the drill entirely. This is just a small example of a larger trend that makes little sense to me. Emotions run high regarding conservation yet we have created a throw away culture.
