Those bottom straps are compression straps, the 2 metal rectangle pieces are for connecting the backpack strappettes along with the top 2 now open buckles (which if you aren’t using you should really think about if you are really making the best life choices), and the water bottle holders are sized for holding nalgenes. This bag is not intended to be used as a glorified fanny pack. It requires the additional shoulder support to be in optimal form.

The supplied strap is not useless at all. Hook one side on the right connecter in the back, then cross it over the right shoulder and around your chest to the loop on the other (left) side.

Nice review of the Mountainsith 9L Pack, thinking upgrading to the 9L, I have been using the Mountainsmith 6L TOUR for over 25 years. Personally I really like the sling on these bags. Im a surveyor by trade and use my bag every day and also taken my Mountainsmith 6L to over a dozen countries, and is still in great shape. (Maybe a little dusty} Me and my wife are going to Austria this fall for three weeks and would be great to have just little bit more space.

Those extra loops are for the backpack straps. Sold separately

That’s a nice lumbar pack. Several of the ski patrollers I work with purchased this lumbar pack this year as we had an NSP version available to us. They love it. I’m a pack girl myself but I do really like this. I have a lumbar pack that is similar from years ago that I never use. It just never could get used to. I think you will line this!

I love my MountainSmith lumbar pack. I have a fused back that cannot carry much weight anymore. Instead of a heavy pack I go with a lumbar pack (with the shoulder straps to stop any movement or bouncing.) Other than Six Moons Designs vest backpacks I can only really use lumber packs. They are handy and carry what you really need. They are quite versatile pack. My wife steals mine during foraging season in Maine. Lol
Great videos! Thanks

Awesome, thanks for the review I have been looking all over for this exact review. A long time Osprey guy it';s hard to change, but when it's the Mountainsmith Lumbar packs, they have been making them for like 40 yrs. I was curious to the great fit of the osprey Sava 6L to this Mountainsmith. Actually I have spent a lot $$ on Granite Gear & Dana, but I don't think the have a Lumbar pack.

That thing looks solid. I need to get a lumbar pack soon for more dayhikes. Do you think this one will be better than your Osprey?

There is a new 2023 version of this pack. Has anyone compared them?
