The average work-week is about 40 hours for most people... so, is doubling that to 80 hours in residency STILL not enough to train a doctor? Today we're going to be looking at a Harvard article called "Is an 80 hour work-week enough to train a doctor?" As a final year med student, I'll also give some of my thoughts regarding the current work hours for when I start residency this summer

Nice to meet you 🤙 I'm a third year medical student at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada. I'm just trying to document my experiences throughout my medical training and beyond to hopefully help inspire/guide some other students... and make things more fun for myself :) I post a new video once per week.

I love your videos! I never understood why they felt 120 hrs a week iis good fir the pt or resident. Then like u say u add study time. I think 80 hrs a week plus study time is crazy and why u get irritable residence that rush u through a consult then u get the dictation after dc and your like where did he get his info from or they list a full head to toe exam checking all the systems when they stood in front of door. We've had above excellent residents and then those who are all ready burnt out. I say 80 hrs is alot no need to increase. I love your excitement as u transition to the next phase of your journey! I'm so happy for u. Your personality is gonna help u so much! Totally awesome 👌

@Nicholas Lepage completely agree. What do you learn when you struggle to stay awake. Of course the older graduates don’t like the new graduates to work less during residency training and get paid the same as them once they complete their residency. Time change so as training and the insane expectations of 120 hours work week ?!?

I think 80 is a good sweet spot (not sure for surgery though) otherwise we will end up like the UK and end up training 8 years instead of 5 (some people enjoy this system a lot more though because you get a better wage during training). That being said I was looking recently at how many hours a day that would be and it's 11 so I have no idea how you can even have time to work out on top of eating, sleeping and studying your specialty.

I think it's going to be a hard 5 year haha but better to rip it off like a bandaid I think.

Appreciate the honest video! I know residency can be scary but my brother is a pgy1 FM resident and while he does have some weeks that approach 80 hours there are other rotations that are much less if that makes you feel any better.

Quality over quantity. 100 hours of work but only 60 of those hours are effective for information retention because of sleep deprivation, doesn’t seem better than 70-80 hours of effective work.

I think 80 hours is crazy enough… anymore than that feels like abuse to me but idk 🤷‍♂️

Hey! I just had a question that maybe you’ve answered previously but, given that you haven’t done the regular (ie 4 year) med school track, how have you liked the accelerated 3-year program? Do you think it’s been better for you? Just curious about your thoughts on it!

Wouldn't it make sense to add another year onto the residency and have a 60 hour work week instead
I hope you get the residency of your choice!
