Linear Equations in two Variables

In this video, we learn the basics of a linear equation in one variable. We learn the general form: ax + by = c, where a and b are not both zero. We learn how to determine if an ordered pair is a solution. And we also learn how to create a table of values that satisfy a linear equation in two variables.

I am in University of 2022, and I graduated highschool in 2014. When I enterened my math this year (I avoided it last year lol) I had no idea what I was doing. My professor would always say "You guys should know this" but, to be FAIR. Not all of us transition from highschool to University right off the bat (like me). So this was very confusing. I've had 5 classes so far and I literally have a test on the 23rd. These hours Ive been in class I've had no idea until I stumbled onto your videos. YOU TEACH ME BETTER THAN MY SCHOOLS DOES!!! I've learned this under 2 hours of work put into than the 5 days of my class. I did my first practice quiz we have and got 3/12. After I studied and learned from you I retook the test and got 10/12 within those 2 hours of work. I just want to say THANK YOU!!! Im not so dumb at math like I thought I was

If you are confused as to where the numbers come from, we can simply choose a value for x and solve for the unknown y or vice versa.
For Example:
3x + 5y = 10
I can just pick some value for x, let's say 1. Now since x is 1, I can plug a 1 in for x in the equation.
3(1) + 5y = 10
3 + 5y = 10
Now, I have a linear equation in one variable. I can solve for y:
3 + 5y = 10
5y = 7
y = 7/5
This tells us that if x is 1, y is 7/5. You can pick any number you want and plug in for x and solve for the unknown y or vice versa.
