Thanks for the great educational video, and a huge thanks for not ruining it with crappy background music while you're talking. I don't know why some people are compelled to add annoying background music throughout the video.

Paid $800 for my 1974 CAT22, and have put in maybe a couple of grand bringing her back to life. I’m having so much fun with this boat, the process, and honing my sailing!

Love the series of videos. One thing you forgot to mention is if you trailer the boat you have to demast it after every outing, and restep the mast every time you go out. For that reason alone many keep the trailerables wet.
I also think that when buying a small boat in the water many will not have them gone over by a professional so you need to have someone show you how to look for blisters or soft spots.
I never trust that sails are new, I always assume all sails and running rigging needs to be replaced.
And as you have said alot, small boats are not fast but sailing is the ultimate way to boat. It does not get any better than a fast broad reach in good winds.
Great channel, keep up the posts

I bought a 17' "pocket yacht" for $350.
I spent about an additional $1000 restoring it. Couldn't be happier for a measly $1300 boat! Me and the kid love our weekend camping trips in it.

I just bought a recently surveyed Canadian Sailcraft 22 for $3750 in immaculate condition, custom trailer and 6 HP outboard included. The previous owners really cared and did a fantastic job maintaining her and kept a binder with detailed records and manuals. The boat came turn key with all the amenities and parts you would need for solo live-aboard cruises. All I have to do is standard maintenance like redoing antifouling, liven up the exterior wood trim and replace a dead mast light.

Marine connection Liquidators in Ft. Pierce. They have so much at about 1/2 of West Marine prices. Amazing store for marine equipment, parts and accessories.

I got my C-22 about a month ago for $2, 800 on ebay. I keep mine in the Great Salt Lake, and my slip fees are significantly less than yours, mine are $126 per month in the summer which includes water. Fortunately mine is in really good shape, only things I have added are wax about $25, registration $380, and a solar power controller for $17. But... I think new sheets and halyards may be in the future...

Great video. Thanks for all the info. Bought Catalina 30 last month for close to 8K. I am 1/2 way through repairs and in for $5k so far. Needed to replace heat exchanger, bilge pump, engine parts. Other costs include mechanical parts, cleaning supplies, dinghy, outboard and lines. At least, sails are in great condition. 🥴

In Dec.2023 I bought a 30` Hunter from a sailor in New Port Richey Fl. for 2k with 3 good sails, rigging and solar power with a running 2QM20 yanmar that needed a raw water pump rebuilt . He needed the boat out of the slip for a new boat so bargaining was easy. Me my Brother and sister in-law motored and sailed the boat from NPR to Port Saint Lucie Fl. across the Okeechobee Waterway 6 days with no issues. Couldn`t be happier.

Great overview, many of those items can be reduced in cost with the right shopping around, I work in industrial equipment sales and have access to discount on stainless hardware companies that sell specific marine fittings, cleats, pulleys etc.. and you would be amazed at the crazy margins these companies charge for basic stuff, pays to shop around and ask for discount.

Was given a Cat 22 a month ago by a new friend. This is very helpful in showing me what to expect to get it reliable after a 3 year 'break' with the previous owner.

How cool.. my dad worked at this boat factory back in the 80’s, he was happy to see one again. ✨☺️

Awesome video! Thank you so much breaking this down as cleanly as you did I am sure it wasn't easy to count out all of your past payments like that for us.

1980 Pearson 23 Cat, paid $1500, was in great shape with a trailer and fresh bottom paint, my most expensive part is the slip fee of $335 a month, need to move it to a cheaper lake 🙃 . No major investment other than cleaning supplies and my solar add on.

There’s a lot of good advice in your video. I’m interested to by small sailboat and your video are inspiring. I’m from Canada near Montreal and Catalina 22 footers are often available and it seems a good choice for a first boat. Thanks for all the great videos
