Aether and Lumine are both canon, they just have their own timeline. Maybe someone will say "let's wait for the anime to come out, to find out who the canon MC is". Expect the story of the game to be different from the animation series.

Hoyoverse stated that both Aether and Lumine are canon MCs (otherwise we wouldn’t have a choice to pick a twin).
I think the only reason HYV uses Aether as traveller twin during the promo videos and trailers is for consistency. But in web events and the non-in game promotional stuff, Lumine is used as the traveller twin.

Genshin using Aether as their poster MC does sort of imply that they viewed him as the main character whilst creating the storyline for the game. They probably added Lumine to prevent players from complaining about not having Lumine as a playable character to begin with, judging by the fact that some already enjoy Lumine's character design more then Aether's, there definitely would've been complaints.

Reminds me of the Aranara quest where they told the MC (my MC is Lumine) that the golden nara they knew used to speak a lot and would tell them how much he loves his sister and tbh i can imagine Aether being the noisy brother who brags a lot about his sister more and Lumine being the silent and cool sister rather than the other way around❤ while yes, Lumine looks badass as abyss princess, Aether also plays the part well. So, both are canon for me and can fit into their roles but there are times i am glad i choose Lumine.

Personally I prefer Eather as a villian and Lumine as the main character. I'm difficult in explaining, but I feel more invested in the story and emotionally bounded to a villian if they give off golden retriever vibes (Eather) and I feel more bounded to the main character when they seem reserved and somewhat colder if that makes sense (Lumine) at least in the genshin impact game. That is how I personally interpret their personalities when I play as Lumine. It makes me feel more connected to the story. To me it personally feels like it fits like that.

yes, that is an explanation for why playable lumine has the flower. but one can argue that the abyss twin lumine wears it as a symbol of her connection with khaenri’ah, she does like the nation a lot. so the flower cannot confirm nor deny her mc role as canon.
actually, ashikai made a point in her caribert quest recap, that both twins are canon because they’re interchangeable and act almost exactly the same even if their personalities are different. kinda like irl twins might be in sync with each other. no need to invent the wheel, both are equal. also, the abyss twin was a traveler once as well, they just got a hot khaenri’ahn man to accompany them instead of a high pitched lavender melon.

Aether was written into the code of the game before Lumine, making him the first main character. They later added Lumine after Aether.

For their birthdays, Ningguang has different voicelines for both of them. For Lumine, she says how she got a gift for her with her usual tone of voice, with no mention of a missing brother. But for Aether, Ningguang says how she hopes he finds his sister.
