Rule #1… never disclose your budget.

If the dealer asks you “what is your budget?” Simply reply with “I’m looking to shop first to see if I find the type of car im interested in”

Make them put in some work, test drive a few cars, don’t look overly “excited” about any particular car. And at all costs ask them to name a price first. Make sure to ask for the OUT THE DOOR price and ask for an ITEMIZED quote. You’ll be able to see any dealership fees and aftermarket add-ons. Those are generally the first things you can negotiate for them to knock off, it’ll also show you what your monthly payment would look like. Be sure to ask them to show you what each term would look like (36, 60, 72 month etc).

If the price is not where you want it to be, tell them “seems like this car may not be for me, it’s not quite the price I’m looking to pay”

If they once again inquire about your budget, simply put it back on them and say “it’s not a price I’m willing to pay for a car, and if there’s nothing more you can do, I understand, I’ll just have to shop elsewhere”..

If the dealer is hungry, they’ll keep working with you, if they’re bottomed out and won’t go any lower, take that quote they gave you and it’ll serve as ammo with the next dealership (provided you’re shopping for the same exact car). Also. Pro tip, go during the last 3 days of the month, if you get lucky you’ll deal with a salesperson who is close to hitting their month’s quota and they’ll fight harder to keep your business. If they seem a bit careless, then chances are they are good on numbers and would rather sell the car next month. Just be patient and keep contacting dealerships (try your best to get itemized quotes each time!). You’ll know when you’ve found your guy if they keep going back and forth with you and even involve their manager.

I can hardly believe it isn't mandatory in the US to tell the customer the total cost of the loan _including_ the interest 🤯
Here in Germany 🇩🇪 (and I'm quite sure, everywhere in the EU) the customer _must_ be told the monthly rate, the interest rate, the number of months and the total cost of the loan.
_Before_ signing the contract.
Otherwise they can sue the seller or dealer.

Always talk out the door price and not monthly payments. Also don't bring up trade ins untill you are negotiated/at the end.

Actually you can take the longer loan and pay it off early, plus your payment will be lower if you fall on tough times. Personally 400/month would be desirable. 😊

For anybody wanting to buy a car this may be important but there are more factors like can you comfortably afford the car's maintenance depending on the car you get like if it's electric. If something electric goes bad can you afford that? If getting a gas powered vehicle can you afford regular routine maintenance for the vehicle. Buying a car. It's not only about paying your car note and insurance. There's more to it. Never buy a car that's out of your means.
