"The tilting flume at the Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources Management at RWTH Aachen University shows the differences between subcritical and supercritical flow. Therefore, a hydraulic jump is generated in open channel flow. A hydraulic jump is formed when the depth of flow changes from supercritical to subcritical state."

When touching the surface with the broom in the subcritical flow, why do the waves propagate so quickly upstream? It seems like they travel extremely fast, against the flow.
