one thing my music teacher would get us to do is clap along with the metronome, if you are perfectly in time you wont hear the clicks... I was the only one in my class who could do this.. that was 20 years agao or more.. i just tap my foot these days

For me it feels like turning up the gain with max treble and bridge pickup exposes all the issues with my playing since the string noise rings out so much more.
