Let us all be honest, The Original is the absolute best but this ain't to bad, Atleast it had them actually be Martians and octopus type, Take place in Britain, And have a Character called Ogilvy, And overall plot is very similar to the book it is just I REALLY do prefer the old Victorian setting and I don't mind a 1913 or 1938 setting, Just you know these old times, Though the fact the black kid (Dont remember his name) can mention the Tim Burton Movie Mars Attacks but not the War of the Worlds is somewhat of a crime

it's a pretty good film, if you don't compare it with Spielberg's version.

Wait, so these tripods don't have magic force fields yet they still roll over a modern military? How?

This really is a near-exact retelling of the original novel "War of the Worlds", and like with that, Ben informs them that the military has been completely exterminated in mere *days* at most; they could only put up a measily few days combat before they were completely eradicated in the course of the battle. In short, their entire nation's collapsed completely, any government officers who have survived have committed cowardice; those that fulfilled their duty are long-dead, or simply eaten by the Martians; and the ones who resist the aliens will inevitably meet the same fate... they have never had any chance from the start.

well atleast the 05 version made sence for why the military couldnt fight back. This one appeared to have no shields and were weak enough to be taken down by a hand grenade. why the couldn't the military take them down with ease.

It's good to see that H.G. Wells' classic SF story is still inspiring folk to adapt it. Without seeing the whole thing, I don't know the details, but in the main, this one looks at least half decent. OK, so it doesn't follow the actual story very closely, but then, it has been modernised. The protagonist in Wells' original tale has been replaced by three students, you still have the doctor, the religious man ( a curate in the book) and a military man ( who suffered a deep inferiority complex when he saw what was happening). Yet, the ships, tripods and red weed come from Mars, the Martians are octopus like, and perhaps best of all, having brought at least London, if not the world, to its knees, the Martians die from all the various bacteria, viruses and other pathogens that fill our planet alongside us... with strong hints that, given time, the Martians might be able to adapt to them!
A film doesn't have to be a big budget blockbuster to be good- think 'Monsters'. Don't get me wrong, because I loved Spielberg's adaptation, , but some adaptations work better than others. The latest offering from the BBC had good creatures and special effects, but made some awful errors. Whilst placing it in its period setting (the Victorian era) it tried to 'update' things by turning the protagonist into an unmarried mother, and getting all moralistic on certain topics, which wouldn't have been seen as an issue then. The result was stodgy and mostly unappealing even to die hard SF fans. There was another adaptation that came out just afterward, but whilst I've heard about it, I haven't seen it or heard very much about it, so wonder how well it did.
This adaptation, however, seems to have taken the basic elements of the story and filled the rest in with its own ideas. It looks like it didn't go overboard trying to add anything extra, and though set in a modern day, didn't try to add on modern moral values, at least that I can see. They say less is more, and in this instance, it seems they got it just about right!

0:05 Its not a good look when the helpless civilians in your movie look like they're going on a leisurely jog.

When you look at it, this is actually the most accurate representation of War of the Worlds set in modern day London.
