The future is here: version 5.00 of MPLAB X IDE by microchip offers (beta) support for programming AVR microcontrollers using the Atmel ICE programmer/debugger. Here's a quick "blink" demo with the new ATmega4809.

Congrats! You have almost as much likes as the original Microchip video about the subjet

About the "download" / "upload" terms. Some years ago I worked with Texas Instruments Code Composer Studio. There "download" meant to load code into microcontroller. I guess it depends what is up and what is down for you.

Then it was explained to me that you "download" from internet since internet is high above the computer but you download to microcontroller since it is below the computer in the hierarchy of devices. Then I got used to that kind of thinking.

In the Arduino world you always download to your computer and upload away from your computer.

Just a thought. I noticed you fixed your usage of the word, but what you said actually matched how I was used to it before.

This IS good news, after a bit of a fiasco with microchips PICKit4 programmer, and an exchange of just one unhelpful suggestion from them; i lost patience waiting for another new IDE to fix a really inexcuseable problem ( MCLR pin not being released on the 12F PIC's after programming) i gave them a bit of a roasting about their tools and software not delivering what was promised. Good to see they have finally made some progress...maybe we will even get Atmel documents in PDF? the shock may be too much. 'eventually' all of the microchip development tools will support the full range of PIC AVR ARM-Core and eventually even MicroSemi; now that Microchip own them. But its still far from perfect; just too many things still broken:-
Still no SDcard support for the PICKit4, 'power target from tool' is really flaky and most of the time won't 'stick',
program works but verify doesn't ( it reads back zero's despite the fact it just programmed and verified...!)
12F parts now get released from reset correctly in this new IDE/IPE; but connection to them is flaky as hell.
The first run with the new IDE after the install froze up my windows7 PC just as it was installing 'communication libraries', although the shortcuts are on the desktop and the IPE runs it has no entry in Windoze 'programs and setings' and so no uninstall utility to clean the mess out...GREAT!
when i got it running it bricked the firmware in the PICKit4 and had to be re-flashed from X IDE requiring the use of a paper clip, and a 'plug then un-plug' shuffle.not a great start by any means! just over 50 Atmel parts are beta support only and Atmel hardware only, so not much better than using Atmel Studio...other than it doesn't swallow most of your hard drive like Studio v7.xx does. soooo now i have to edit windows registry without crashing through it like a wild pig..80/

Thanks for the intro to MPLAB AVR, please do you know of any support for USBasp programmer? i have been using it with Atmel Studio util this recent development.
