People start to lose muscle mass in their late thirties or forties at a rate of roughly 1 percent per year, translating to a 1 to 3 percent loss in strength or power. Doing what we can to slow muscle loss as we age may improve quality of life.

Dr. Phillips stresses the importance of building muscle reserves early in life, so we start the decline from a higher plateau. He draws parallels with building bone mass but points out that, unlike bone mass muscle can be added later in life. In this clip, Dr. Stuart Phillips describes how muscle mass and strength decline with age and outlines the importance to maintaining quality of life.

Muscle mass will decline with age if you let it. Weight training, nutrition and mobility training solves this. You can gain more than “a little bit” of muscle if you commit.

This is going to vary big from individual to individual. I'm 48 and have lost no muscle. I'm the biggest i've ever been and I started training at 15. I think it comes down to the individual's dedication to consistent training and nutrition level.

Bne density can be improved. Japanese studies using 15 mg of vitamin K2 3 times a day increased it. However most supplements we have give measly 100mcg (not mg!).

Each individual is different. Our mindset is so important to positive outcomes or not. If we believe that our grandpa had, bad joints, heart, lungs, etc. If we believe it is our family line and genetically it is only a matter of time, then it will come! Epigenetics is above genetics. We can choose with our lifestyle to express or not express our genetic line. There are so many people that are older that maintained muscle mass and strength. Jack Lalayne, Dr. Montique and on You~~Tb~~; Dr Shawn Baker is an amazing example of an older man, just turned 55 and is in amazing muscular, strength and cardio shape. Absolutely amazing check him out sometime. He posts videos of him working out. Just Wow!
