At the core of every human being is the need to connect, feel accepted, and have a place where they belong. When complex trauma makes connection seem difficult or impossible, drugs, alcohol, and other addictions are often used in its place.

Drugs and alcohol can inhibit true healing from the effects of Complex Trauma, and have to be given up to make way for healthy connections with safe people.

This kind of reminds me of some children with Autism who have an extreme attachment to a safe or familiar toy while having difficulty connecting to people. I know each child is different but the similarity came to mind.

From actually being in an environment surrounded by actual "addicts, " they teach addicts that they simply have a gene that makes them that way. The crazy thing is that they all usually act the same. Like a "victim, " always complaining about nonsense, blaming others for why they have it so bad and why they must use, effectively blaming others for their reason to use.

Yes, it's possible to be physically addicted, but before that point, no one is addicted; everyone just suffers from a lack of discipline and accountability. Claiming to be an addict throws accountability out the window by blaming everything else except the individual using. Find out what they are running from and have them face their fears, which usually comes down to a lack of accountability because, as kids, we are usually punished for doing bad things, which makes people fear accountability. So if they simply said, "Yes, I lack discipline and accountability, so I will just be more disciplined and accept accountability, " the desire to use will diminish. You are not an addict until you become physically addicted; until that point, you just have bad habits, and like any habit, you can stop. However, the more you do the same thing, the more you enforce it, meaning the harder it is. It's mental, so grow a pair, become disciplined and accountable, and you will recover. You know what to do; the real question is why are you simply not doing what you're supposed to do? Why do you lack initiative? Let's hear how many people get mad and remember your belief system will determine what information you learn and what information you choose to ignore because it's hard to realize that our beliefs are our opinions about life and no one wants to belief they're entire belief system can be wrong so when challenged people get hostile. Yet the only way to actually learn anything is to set aside your own beliefs and viewing from others' perspectives.
