FIX the 6 Common BMW N55 PROBLEMS

I'm sure there are other issues that come along with the BMW n55 engine, but I would consider these 6 the biggest problems as they could leave you on the side of the road. If you have something that wasn't mention please share it in the comments and if you think it's a DIy level job or something to take to a shop. If your wondering about an oil catch can. I installed mine about 15,000 mi ago and have caught no oil yet so it looks like blow by isn't too bad on these cars.

The coolant hose return line is a very common failure point as well. Very simple to replace and inexpensive. It's known to fail at 40/50K miles.

Do not forget the oil filter housing gasket. It can leak oil onto the belt and if it’s bad enough the belt can slip off, get sucked into the front crank and block the oil pump ruining the engine.

not sure if I missed it, but you forgot to mention the oil filter housing gasket.. which can lead to catastrophic issues when it leaks on top of the serpentine belt

Thanks Fritz! I'm approaching 104k miles and have replaced the charge pipe twice (once under warranty, then I replaced with the vrsf myself when the second started to leak, no issues since), oil filter housing gasket (used a mechanic, but EatSleepDrive has a good tutorial), coolant hose off the expansion tank (left me stranded, but very easy fix with part and coolant). Previous N55s have had electric water pump and thermostat issues, but possibly fixed now considering the lack of comments on the 2addicts forums. No issues with the boost pipe or intercooler. Very reliable car, especially after all known issues are addressed and even more so if the car is kept stock. I've driven across the country 3 times with no issues and the last 30k miles have been problem free with routine DIY maintenance.

Fantastic video. I’m looking to get a f30 335i, and all these problems worried me as I’ve never had a turbo car before. This reassures me in the fact that the n55 is a decently reliable platform after you do some maintenance to it. Thank you for the informative video. I’ll be sure to do all six fixes on my f30.

I changed the boost / charge pipe and never even thought about the turbo pipe, especially when I staged the car with the amount of pressure. Thanks for the advice.

Damn Thank u bro I just bought my BMW M235I from 2014 and the charge pipe just broke. Because of your video I can get it done and I didn’t know it was an issue. I think your video is so informative about the problems that the N 55 engine has I have already subbed account now.

I LOVE THIS VIDEO !!! THANK YOU A to watch & explain where are the specific place of this common issues in the N55 !!! Cuz when we talk with a mechanic, ( & like me you don't know anything about that ) They look at you like if you talk a stranger language ! 😅😂 So THANK YOU SO MUCH 4 THIS SPECIFIC POV !!!!IT WILL HELP ME A LOT for my purchase ( 4 serie from 2015 with the six cylinder ) & when i will fix this before issues com to appear 🙏🏾👍🏾🤞🏾 i wish U a GREAT CONTINUATION on Y.Tub 😊

If some of you are interested in a 228i rather than a 235i, BMW resolved the timing chain issue for the N20/N26 engines produced 2016 model year and after. If you're still uneasy about it, ensure you perform 5000 to 7500 mile oil changes. My F22 M Sport is a 16 with 69k+ miles with no issues so far (knock on wood).

Fritz is on point with the N55 engine, I have had 3 of the issues discussed happen or happening on the 2014 BMW X3

I live in Japan.
I owned m235i, but I had an engine blow at suzuka circuit. The cause was crank lock. I had a crank shield guard of KIES, but there was no effect. For engine failure countermeasures, it may be better to add a reinforced valve and an oil cooler. I'm sorry I'm not good at English.

I'm looking for N55 in F30 body, but I live in Thailand and there is no F30 N55, I need to find a N55 engine to swap into F30 body by import an engine from abroad. So, this video made me clearly understand the commons issues of this one . Thanks man !!!
