When I'm selling it to you, it's a violin. When I'm buying it from you, it's a fiddle.

A violin has strings, a fiddle has strangs

If you can waltz to it, it’s a violin. If you clan clap, stomp, whistle, and square dance to it, it’s a fiddle. 🍺

The difference is the way it played, what's being played on it

I thought it was just dependent on what music you were playing on it

The fiddle player in my Dad's bluegrass band maintains that the only difference is that someone's spilled beer on a fiddle.

A cello, a bass, and a violin walk into a bar…

...so, if you delicately spell champagne on it, does it turn back into a violin?

Here's the answer:

Violin=classical musician/jazz
Fiddle=country, bluegrass.

I've always told people that they're the same thing, but the world you're in will change the terminology you use. Like, I shred with my rock friends, I play with my classical friends, and I blow with my jazz friends.

I just make up stuff and tell people fiddles are 7/16 of an inch bigger and are tuned differently by a half sharp

As my dad would say (As a joke ofc): “The intelligence of the listener”

It would've been funny if you played something classical but then after the beer you hoe down 🤠

Funny. My mother learned violin when she was a young girl. I am 57. She died years ago. I grew up in a log cabin, listening to bluegrass at summer picnics. It turns out my mother had an actual Stradivarius. Was it a fiddle? LOL! No, it was not a reproduction.

A violin walks into a bar and encounters a country band playing music the violin has never heard before; country music, the violin wants to join in, as it finds this new music exciting and now he goes by fiddle
