Honestly, we need more romantic concertos for viola. That dark, warm, sound combined with a rousing orchestral score would probably make for an epic piece. I think a really dark and dissonant concerto in the style of Shostakovich would really sound amazing. Coming from a violinist who loves his viola jokes, it is a seriously beautiful instrument that doesn't deserve to be as neglected as it is.

Both. I think of violin as a lead instrument but the viola definitely has a warmer nicer tone for me.

I play the Irish fiddle, and I learned how to play the viola for Irish music by ear. It was a big adjustment to play the viola. Not only is bow action different, but most of the tunes are different fingerings. I had to learn how to switch between the fiddle (violin) and viola.
It’s such a lovely voice in general. Although it gets overshadowed by other instruments (primarily guitars and banjos), people notice the contrast.
I have friends that play the fiddle and also have violas! We want to have an Irish viola jam session! 🍀🎻🇮🇪

both fiddles are great in their own way, there is no right or wrong answer to this debate. Both instruments play an important role in orchestra, especially the viola. I just don’t get why some people hate viola, i mean they deserve the same amount of love that violin does. And in my opinion, the viola creates character of orchestra in general. Sure some people might not agree with my statement but that doesn’t mean that you should hate the viola. In all matters violin and viola are both great instruments including the rest of the instruments of the string family.
