I had a music teacher that taught that a fiddle was just a violin you can spill beer on

Its actually in a quantum superposition in which you don't know actually what instrument it is until after the music starts playing

The only differences are the way they’re played, and the way the bridge is set up. Fiddles have flatter bridges so it’s easier to play double stops.

A violin is carried in a case. A fiddle is carried in a gunny sack.

According to "History of Western Music"...violin is what the instrument is called when music being played has virtue and fiddle is what it's called when music being played has vice.
So yeah.... church and the tavern

If your selling it. It’s a violin. If you’re buying it, it’s a fiddle. 🤣

Fiddle is simply the Anglosajón way of calling the violin. There is no major difference, they are the same instrument. If it is true that this term is used more in the traditional music of those countries, such as Scottish, Irish, or old time music.

The difference isn't the instrument: a fiddle is still a violin.

The difference is the style of playing and the bridge.

A regular violin is meant for Western Classical music, jazz, and some other cases, but a fiddle is meant for country and folk music where you have a lot more string crossing, more ornaments, some other articulation stuff. Because of that, a violin that's meant for fiddling has a slightly different bridge. Technically the same bridge but the difference is the curvature of the bridge, it's a tad smaller so playing multiple strings is easier.

This isn't to say that you can't use a regular violin for fiddle-playing but the bridge isn't really made for it.

The fiddle or violin are objects. They do not become something else when the are or are not being played. While they are being played they are identical. The difference is in the playing not the object. The fiddle and violin are just different names for the same thing.

They don’t wipe their rosin off the instrument
