A day of mourning is being observed in Ukraine after one of the worst waves of Russian missile strikes in months, with at least 41 people killed and 166 injured.

The main children's hospital in the capital Kyiv was among buildings hit in cities across the country on Monday.

Russia denied targeting the Kyiv hospital, saying it had been hit by fragments of a Ukrainian air defence missile, while Ukraine said it had found remnants of a Russian cruise missile.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called the attack "brutal" and described his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin as a "bloody criminal".

Condolences and condemnations are not a replacement for the air defense.

Our leaders are always reacting when the damage is done instead of being proactive. That is a clear sign of absence of leadership and planning, unfortunately. Show some backbone!

It is ridiculous to impose restrictions on Ukraine's ability to defend itself!

How did this happen when your reports always show you shoot down every single Russian missile something not right there I think it might be your air defence systems

This war has cost Ukraine a generation of men. They are about sacrifice another generation with their call ups. No wonder so many youngsters are trying to flee the country. UK are you proud ? You told Ukraine fight or lose all support. Why?

This strike is not an accident, it is a clear message from Russia to the West when NATO is about to have its summit. I think the West should make a tangible response like removing any limits to strike the Russian territory. Mere statements of support for Ukraine will not work as Russia is stepping up.
