Gene expression is the process by which information from a gene is used in the synthesis of a functional gene product. These products are often proteins, but in non-protein coding genes such as ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes or transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, the product is a functional RNA. The process of gene expression is used by all known life - eukaryotes (including multicellular organisms), prokaryotes (bacteria and archaea) and viruses - to generate the macromolecular machinery for life.

Here's something I've wondered for a long time and would love some insight on:
Do these processes happen kind of automatically or does there seem to be some force or intelligence acting throughout. In other words, if you perfectly replicate the molecular conditions of a cell artificially would the various molecules floating around just do this by virtue of their physical property or is it kind of the mystery of life as to what exactly "motivates" these life processes.
I hope that question makes sense and someone who has a good understanding of this science can give me some more information. I'm not trying to make this mystical or spiritual per se. I just have always noticed that when we talk about these processes there is a tendency to refer to them almost as if they are done by a series of independent and intelligent organisms but I've often assumed that maybe it's more of a projection/personification because we don't have quite the language for the average audience to grasp the "mindless" mechanical nature at this tiny level.
