Essentially it's this:

Cinematically Controlled + Mostly Daylight Shooting = BMPCC 6K

Run-And-Gun/Guerilla + Night Shooting = Sony FX3

Combining them seems like the best approach then grade them stylistically to match.

I switched from P6KPro + Canon R6 to Sony FX3 + FX6, and I totally agree, the image quality is much better on the Blackmagic (better colors, textures, details, highlight roll off = much more filmic). I really miss it, and I regret my choice of following the hype wagon. The Sony's are convenient that's for sure but if you are looking for the best quality choose the Blackmagic!!!

I've been a Panasonic user for 4 years and just recently purchased the Sony FX3 and I am now so dependent on Autofocus. I never realized just how insanely accurate and steady the focus could be, especially in run and gun scenarios. I think that is worth the extra $1, 400 alone! Great video as always!

Don't use External ND's when testing cameras. Cause different ND's affect the sensor differently.

Upgraded from the GH5 to the FX6. Man, autofocus is a game-changer. I thought it was overhyped, but once you use native lenses, it is nearly impossible to go back.

Finally someone who says the right thing! It's not about the camera, it's about the "style" of how you make videos. I film wildlife and would definitely prefer the FX3 for ISO performance. Great video, keep it up!

As a Blackmagic user myself I can comment on the difference you noticed in dynamic range. Looking at the tests by CinD testing the A7S3 which is the exact same sensor in the FX3 but with a different body. CineD tests show the Sony is actually a full stop in dynamic range above the Blackmagic. The difference you are noticing is the sudden fall of in the highlights and shadows from the Sony. Here the Blackmagic rolls off smoother which gives it the appearance of equal dynamic range to the Sony.

here is how I see these 2 cameras. if you want to get the cheeper camera get the fx3. 1 lens (24-70 or 16-35), 1 vnd filter and 1 sd card( v60 is the best money to performance option) and batteries( at least 3) will take you all the way. the BMPCC 6K is very expensive. 1st after you buy the camera thinking its cheep, you will most likely buy the sigma 18-35 for the virsatility, then an ssd (samsung t5- the t7 or newer dosen't work on it) and you will want a focus puller cause no AF(nucleas nano and a guy to pull focus(optional)) and to mount the storage and focus pulling on the camera, a cage. you will also get a v-mount later on because the battery dosent last at all. later you will buy an external ND as well because the internal nd is not enought and lots of extra hardrives because you will find out the 6k spits out really huge size files so about 8tb if you dont mind clearing drive every 2-3 months. But if you want the best image and post production ability and no money limit, get the 6k. the braw is easy to process and has in my openion more dynamic range than the fx3. but make sure you use the cameras before buying anyone of them. the safer one is the fx3 if you cant have test runs.

Very well-done video, and glad to see a fellow creator from Florida. I’ll say the reason you may not have noticed Sony’s 15 stops of dynamic range. The way you exposed your shots were fantastic, but in order to reap the full dynamic range of S-Log3 you must expose each shot +1.0 to +1.7 past what the multi-meter says is +0.0. Since they clean up shadows rather well via low-light superiority and highlight recovery is decent, it adds more range.

Dude, thanks for this video! Blackmagic is king! We need more of these types of videos!

Sony needs to add a "usable" dynamic range to the description, but there's no way it has 15 stops. The big difference is the Pocket 6K pro is a real cinema camera, where you have to light, learn to pull focus, and learn how to shoot steady handheld.

Even still, the dual native ISO lets you capture clean images in lower light situations or just using practicals. Shooting in almost complete darkness and expecting to get an image is ridiculous. If you master that, you can use this camera for run-and-gun and documentary films. Ultimately, you will be a more highly skilled filmmaker in every way rather than depending on AF or IBIS.

I own both cameras and I normally pick up the fx3 for my run and gun . I use the 6k for higher end .

Completely agree with every word said in this video. I use both cameras. The 6K Pro is a beast in controlled environments. The FX3 is unparalleled in run and gun situations.

Good review bro, i think that the red cast in the sony fx3 is due to the ND filter. Most of the consumer NDs doesn't have the IR filter, so you end up with a lot of red and magenta in the shadows and mid-tones

Amazing dude!! I was literally thinking about which one of these two cameras should I get. This is truly the best video comparing the two, thank you❤ I will go with the FX3 :)

Man, you produce quality videos like super fast! I'd love to see a BTS of your content creation processs🙌🏻

Also, FX3 for sure. I'm currently working on a narrative project where I'm able to rent an fx3 and an A7IV for a b-cam. Dream combo if you ask me. Their autofocus, reliability & mobility is 🔥🔥🔥

Previous owner of bmpcc6k pro, and now fx3. I agree with your point and I still lean to blackmagic braw image quality, but yeah shooting solo and run and gun made the blackmagic rig get big and more flashier. So losing the image quality and gained small form factor, better battery life, no cropping when shooting lower res, mobility, and lowlight performance. I believe both cameras are amazing and it all depends on the project type and style.

Been using the Studio Camera 6K Pro with a Canon f2.8 70-200 side-by-side a FX6 in a live setting for a few weeks now....the 6K Pro wins hands down. It's like the Sony has a weird color smoothing or something and makes the skin tones look muddy!

Great video! I own the Pocket 6K, early this year I bought two Sigma F1.7 lenses to get better
quality in low light. I'm thinking of getting the FX3 for fast shooting in low light. I usually shoot
manual not auto. I like the Pocket 6K skin tone better (12bit) of course, but if you're someone
prefer auto instead of manual, you should go for the FX3. Alex, good job on comparing these two cameras.
