I am a professional organizer and I find people that have hoarding issues typically have had some major trauma in their life. It can be debilitating for them. For me, compassion is necessary as they have gone through something really tough in their life. Thanks for shedding light on this subject.

I know a few people who grew up below the poverty line and resourcefulness in reusing something is a big thing as you can't afford to just buy something new when you need it. You keep EVERYTHING "just in case". Even after you make more money and can afford it this feeling never really leaves you. Food insecurity does the same thing where people will hide food in safe spaces so they know they always have it if they need it. It doesn't just go away because your environment or circumstances suddenly change.

Thank you for talking about this... sometimes ppl with ADHD or depression also struggle with hoarding. We definitely need to be more compassionate and help one another find the support they deserve. ❤

My husband lived in foster care his whole childhood in a system that completely failed him. He was forced to keep his things in a trash bag and would be threatened of having his few personal items thrown away whenever he would behave in a way his fosters didn't want him to. As an adult he feels the need to prepare. It comes from his fear of not having anything that he constantly faced when he was young. I love him so so much but it was something I was not used to. We go to couples therapy once a month now so I can learn more about him and so he can too. ❤

I believe my grandma was a hoarder. She was very very poor and when she got her house she started having many things like 2 refrigerators, 3 microwaves, clothes from the 70s she had and etc. I believe it was linked to a trauma of being poor again and having nothing.

She is so articulate about a very sensitive’disease’, such as hoarding. I find her admirable in SO MANY different levels♥️

I’ve also noticed just in life (no clinical experience) that people sometimes start hoarding after a significant life event. Something they just can’t seem to get past and things pile up after that.

She’s an incredible teacher and of all celebrities she NEEDS to have a channel like this to share her voice. So awesome

I’m a hoarder. And what “cured” me of it was when my house caught on fire and I lost everything but my child, my brother and sister and only one of my dogs. We lost 3 dogs, 2 cats and 200 years worth of family history. I’m afraid of keeping anything now. I’m bipolar and have OCD, ADHD, ADD & PTSD as well as major depressive disorder. I’m a hot mess who’s barely hanging on some days but I’m still here. Thank you for sharing this

Thanks for sharing this! I have been an "extreme collector" for years and just now able to admit to being a hoarder. It started as a response to loss and to feel safe. It is scary.

I love how she clarifies the difference between collecting and hoarding.

This clip— I can’t stop watching this clip. This is a very real lightbulb moment for me, hearing that there is a known connection between OCD and hoarding. I just— I’m very grateful for this video.

Can’t let go of memories- time keeps changing, and it equates to dying.

So having keep sakes from the past is almost like holding on to beautiful moments that have long passed.

I have OCD and am a minimalist. Things make me feel insecure and anxious. I have ADHD and am a compulsive cleaner. I could never be a hoarder. I’m so glad she mentioned this as it helps me understand people who have OCD but behave differently.
