How to Calculate the Dividend Yield

You calculate a company's dividend yield by dividing its dividends per share by its stock price. Thus, if a company paid out $3 in dividends for each share of stock, and it had a stock price of $100, the dividend yield would be 3%. The dividend yield tells you the return that an investor would earn from holding a stock if you ignore capital appreciation (increases in the value of the stock) and focus strictly on dividends received.—

Well, I feel investors should be focusing on under-the-radar stocks, and considering the current rollercoaster nature of the stock market, Because 35% of my $270k portfolio comprises plummeting stocks that were once revered and I don't know where to go here out of devastation.

Sorry but I am confused, let's say I bought a stock at 4$ and after 1 year the stock cost 50$, my dividend yield will be calculated based on 4$, 50$ or average per year?
Thank you
