Thousands of unlicensed Utah drivers raise safety concerns for all road users, including cyclists

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — A 2News investigation has revealed a startling uptick in the number of unlicensed drivers on Utah roads, elevating concerns for the safety of all road users including cyclists.

In 2020, 6,900 drivers were cited for not having a valid driver's license. That number leapt to 8,300 by 2022 and stands at nearly 6,200 so far this year, according to the Utah Highway Patrol (UHP).

Lou Clark, a student who bikes to and from campus at the University of Utah, said unlicensed drivers often flout the rules designated for bike lanes.

This is why many drivers block the left lane. Some are just jerks, but many just don't know the rules of the road. I've seen them tailgated, move out of the left lane to allow the tailgater to pass, and then move right back into the left lane. They must think it's great going 70 in the left lane because no one is ever in your lane, and if they can ignore the tailgaters, life in the left lane couldn't be better.

Hey, in a country where anything goes, not getting a driver's license is just one more thing to get away with. Thankfully, the police is cracking down on the nutjobs who think they have the right to do whatever they want with no regard for others or respect for the rules of the road. I imagine these unlicensed drivers are the type of people who accept zero consequences for their actions, whatever they might be.

Drivers there are horrible toward cyclists. They have trucks that spew out black clouds on riders. They honk their horns loudly when they drive past cyclists. It's awful!
I usually rode on the sidewalk. It was safer.
Now more of them don't even have a license!
