Alberta Wildfires: Rainfall expected to aid firefighters as low-pressure system approaches

After another round of evacuations and a weekend full of extreme wildfire activity, some much-needed rain is expected in parts of Alberta, which officials expect will help cool down the fires.
“There is some positive news on the weather. Some isolated thundershowers in (the) central to northwest Boreal (forest) have helped cool down some fires in the region,” said Public Safety and Emergency Services Minister Mike Ellis during a wildfire briefing Monday afternoon.
“And while areas like High Level have not seen the precipitation that we're hoping for, leading to more fire activity than other places, the general picture going forward this week is looking good with some warm showers that are to be expected. This is much needed and positive news for evacuees from areas like Edmonton or Chipewyan who remain out of their homes.”
Low-pressure rain systems are expected to bring widespread rain across much of the province Tuesday through Wednesday, said Alberta Wildfire’s Melissa Story.
“Temperatures are expected to decrease and humidity will increase, which will help firefighters responding to these wildfires,” she said.
There are currently 76 wildfires burning in the forest-protected area of Alberta, 24 of which are out of control.
